Engine Doesn't Like the Air Filter Box

At my wits end.

1986 2+2 N/A

With the engine running, when I bolt down the lid for the air filter box, with or without an air filter in place, the engine begins starving for air and eventually stalls. If I lift the lid before it stalls it returns to a normal idle.

I've checked the passages and there are no blockages.

The only code I'm getting is 11 Crank Angle Sensor. I will address that, but don't see a connection to the above issue. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for your help.

does it run normally if you put it in gear and drive off? put a vacuum gage on it and see what happens when you do the air filter lid. you may think it is starving for air and something else is happening.
