installing cm 3 inch exhaust and all 3 bolts on the turbo elbow broke off ... tried, easy out, it broke off in the stud ... tried pb blaster multiple times no dice ... should I try heating it up with a micro torch ... any other suggestions

 

I always drill them out, but here's a link that provides that method and others.

 

Thas a good article. Welding a bolt on the end works very well, if you're a good welder.

I bought a set of carbide spade bits for just such a problem. Those will cut through anything! But DO NOT use those helical extractors. They break everytime. Use the square tapered ones.

 

Never try to just crack the bolts out without heating them up first, they will almost AWAYS snap. A torch worked well for me, got them red hot and they came out like butter.

Isn't there someone who sells studs they guarantee won't break or at least are made of sterner stuff?

 

It's nothing to do with the strength of the studs. When they're in, especially turbo dump pipes or exhaust studs, they get extremely hot and seize in there. It doesn't matter what they're made of as the same thing will happen anyway I'm sure. You just simply get them red hot before trying to take them out. I've never broken any studs that way, not even once.

LOL! The last Z I bought and stripped was a 73 240Z, and it was sitting in a field, approx. 300 yards from a paved road (nothing but mud and hills in between - even a 4WD couldn't get back there). I dropped the left door on my foot when I released the last bolt - thinking I had it supported by the tires I placed underneath. Ouch! The bolts to the fenders, hood, hatch, fuel lid, cargo lids, manifold, brake master cylinder, etc. were either rusted or stripped, so I had to drill them out. I literally hauled these parts with a wheel barrel back to the main road - just kept piling them up, then called a friend on my cell phone to meet me there at a certain time to haul all the parts with his truck back to my house.

Well, obviously, the hood and hatch lid wouldn't sit on a wheel barrel, and there was no way I could carry either by myself , so my friend and I carried them several yards, then he decided his truck would make it though the mud. Well, not only did I already have a black marks all over my face and body at that point, but we had to call another friend who had a 4WD to pull us out of the mud, who also got stuck in the mud, and we had to call another friend to bring a gas chain saw to cut tree limbs so that we could place them under the wheels of both trucks to get traction! I was covered in mud by the time we finally made it to solid ground. It was hilarious!

Awe, thank you, Nismo! It's nice to know that some guys don't stereotype us females. Trying to figure out a problem with a Z can even stump ASE Certified Mechanics, with or without OBD. The dirt and grunge doesn't bother me, but getting my ponytail stuck in the wheels of a creeper or removing a part that falls onto my chest (ouch!). Just tapping a steering wheel to remove it, then it shoots off and hits "the twins" - yah, ouch again.

IMO, the dirt, grunge, banged knuckles, broken fingernails, yanked hair and bruised twins is well worth it though, and the more people who actually work on their cars, the more they can truly appreciate the "finished product.

 

HE DID JUST STEROTYPE YOU...then took it back when you said you did this and that....his specific words... i cant see you getting down and dirty....then he got noble after your story.
