Alternator Connector Piece Broke Off [Pics]

I just removed my alternator to replace it, and as I was taking off the connectors in the back, a metal cylindrical part fell off of it. One side has a hole that looks like it broke off from part of the harness.

Is this a capacitor or something, and is it really needed?

Cap

Yes that is a capacitor. Go to the auto parts store or junk yard to get one. Splice the new one in and mount it to the back of the alternator. Easy fix.

While you didn't add what year/model your car is, I think we're looking at a distributor that uses points and a condenser (as pictured).

That is the back of the alternator.

Sorry forgot to add it's an 84 NA.

Got the condenser/capacitor on the new alternator and onto the car. Cut off the old connector tip and soldered to the new part so it would be able to snap into the existing connector, electrical tape for added protection
