z31 idle
z31 idle
my idle on my 86 n/a is horrible. it starts up fine and then gets rough idle and the engine dies. there was some serious back firing going on near the cats.. my fuel temp sensor was soldered back together and im thinking it might be that but could it be the idle control?
Welcome to ZDriver!
You don't say how long it takes for your good idle to go bad. If it's a minute or two, your problem is temperature related - and that's possibly a couple of sensors you can check. If it's right away, could be the idle-control solenoids on your air regulator. Sensors are easy to check with a multimeter and your FSM.
Get a freebie factory service manual at XenonZ31 Reference and check out the other cool docs there too. Your FSM is loaded with easy to follow inspect/diagnose/troubleshoot pages that might have the answer for your issue right now. Make the FSM your friend and it will pay you back. Start out by locating the diagrams showing your sensors. They are a big deal on the Z31.
For now, give a little more info here about the car and the problem and we'll give you some ideas about finding the cure.
Thanks and welcome again.

Don't waste money on fuel temp sensor. comes with new fpr and total waste. changed one out and didn't make any difference. More likely the chts is your problem or all that useless idle junk hanging off the drivers side of the plenum. took if off my 86 and blanked off the hole. couldn't be happier. also allows you to get rid of hoses and that horrid three tube junk on the front of the engine with some hose rerouting.
