What part is this?

I own a '87 turbo.

I went over a terrible pot hole which caused this part to break off. This part is found on both sides of the car in the front, basically right under the headlights. The passenger side part is the one that broke off.

After the part separated, it was dangling by an electrical wire. I used duct tape to fasten it down so I could drive to my mechanic. On the way to my mechanic this part completely broke off and the electrical wire was cut.

All of my lights work. I've searched google and the forum, but can't find any information. What does this part do? How pressing is it to fix...I was planning on driving my car about 200 miles this weekend.

Thanks for your help.
