yep. there's a reason people who modify their STIs go with front mounts.

I'd take a front or side mount over a top mount for the simple fact that I wouldn't want the damn thing getting in the way.

What would I be looking for on the VIN number to see if it’s a 200ZR or not?

Well the second digit over is supposed to be the engine code. If it's still an 'H' then it's a 300ZX. If it's anything else then it's most likely a 200ZR since the car only came with two engine options: VG30 and RB20.

hows it feel to know what your baby is?

hmm, still trying to figure where to put a Ic and figure out what size to install also.
well, good luck with your "new to You" 200z, but so you know, a 300zx is better

ehh, maybe, I sunk $2000 and still have not driven it off the storage lot... germany sux. You have to pass a inspection before they will award you plates. but some how you have to fix it with out driving it, kinda funny

But sounds like you have passion, and passion can take you far, especially when you run into a snag or two.

The Z31 came with four different motors in Japan.

VG20ET
RB20DET
VG30DE
VG30ET

Any one of the four different VIN locations.

VIN plate on the dash
VIN plate in the driver door jam
VIN stamped into the firewall
MODEL plate on the strut tower.

It's most likely a 200ZR. It's doubtful anyone would swap an RB20 into anything but a 200ZR.
