Re: Wanted: Short Throw T-5 Shifter
The original transmission was so much better than the T5 its not even funny. That is, unless you had an automatic. But, if you have a BW T5, you can use the short throw shifter made for Mustang T5s. You just may have to modify the shift boot.

Re: Wanted: Short Throw T-5 Shifter
Not sure what other M/T you refer to as better that came in Z31's. Basically they were two tranny's both Waner units - 5S5R30A (Turbo models / Borg-Warner T-5) & FS5W71C (N/Asprirated / B-Warner). The Turbo models have better gearing and carry more gear lube to cool/lubricate.
My 88 is an SS that came standard from the factory with Viscous LSD, Recaro's, stiffer suspension, pearl white paint, & the better T-5 B/W. The T-5's are pretty stout and can handle enormous torque loads from V-8s that even most modified Z's don't get to near to producing. Hopefully someone out there knows of a supplier of short throw kits for T-5s in Turbo-Z's.

Maybe you should research the transmissions a little more.
<a href="http://z31.com/transmission.shtml" target="z31">http://z31.com/transmission.shtml</a>
Only the 84-86 manual turbos came with a BW unit. All others came with Nissan built units. <a href="http://z31.com/articles/5/1.shtml" target="sm">Steve Mitchell</a> blew up 3 BW units with around 600hp before switching to the later Nissan unit because of it's ability to hold high power.
The BW T5 put in the Z31 is NOT the same unit as the World Class T5 that does hold that type of power.
If you have the original transmission, you have a Nissan built unit. Based off the BWT5 maybe, but not a BWT5. I've read on z31.com by several people who have done it that you can use the short throw shifter made for the 240SX. Someone said it wouldn't fit, but someone else said that you use a piece from the old shifter and it works fine.
If you want details about it, go to the z31.com message board and ask for what exactly you need.

Thanks for your comment, but the web isn't always correct, and certainly as you point out, I'm not either. Your correct Borg-Warner doesn't 'make' the Nissan T-5 for most Z31's. Actually Aisan Transmissions built them under licence in Japan with a redesigned tailshaft. T-5's (5S5R30A) were used in Z31 Turbo's through 1989, and the actual Borg-Warner version was used in the 1988 Turbo SS model.
Grab a factory service manual and you will find ( 1988 factory manual page MT-86) and you will even see that all of the M/T's were using B/Warner synchromesh gear sets internally! I'd also add in my experience that Torque is the killer of tranny's not excesive HP. See ya.

If there is any site to trust for having the right infomation, it's Z31.com. It's been around longer than you've probably owned your car. If you don't trust the information up there, you really shouldn't trust anything people on this board tell you. Sorry, I don't have an 88 FSM to look at, so I can't tell you what it says.
If you want to believe the FSM (which incidently, my 84 FSM says that the NAs had adjustable shocks while the turbos were fixed), have fun. I'd really be interested in reading where it says Borg Warner. Can you take a picture or scan it in?
Again:
84-86 turbo = Borg Warner.
87-89 turbo = Nissan.
Z32 transmissions = same nissan internals as the 87-89 manual turbos.
I have a BW T5 sittin in my back yard. I also have a BW T5 sitting in my 50th Anniversary. Both of them have the Borg Warner logo stamped on them at the shifter on the side. Get up under your car and take a look at yours. I bet it doesn't say Borg or Warner on it anywhere. If it does, it was swapped out.
Now, to clarify, I read the fiche (the parts listing for the Z31 also found on z31.com). The fiche lists all the part numbers for ANY part you could possibly find on the car. Also, it gives some information about what things are called. Here is what I found: (you can read for yourself <a href="http://z31.com/fiche/fiche.pl?4:a:1" target="fiche">here</a>.
Manual Transmission found in all year NAs = FS5W71C
Manual Transmission found in 84-86 turbos = FS5R90A (T-5)
Manual Transmission found in 87-89 turbos = FS5R30A
Guess what? That means that the transmissions found in the 84-86 turbos are DIFFERENT than the transmissions found in the 87-89 turbos.
If you don't believe me even after all this, go buy a short throw shifter for a Mustang with a T5 in it. It works in the BW T5 found in the 84-86 turbo Z31s. I've seen it. It feels totally different than stock. But it will NOT fit on the Nissan transmission found in the 87-89 turbo Z31s.
If you finally come to your senses and believe me and z31.com and the fiche (put out by Nissan), go buy a short throw made for a 240sx. People on the z31.com board have said they have done it (at least 4 people).
Either way

Check out this website. http://www.zhome.com/History/SSZ.htm
You'll see actual B/W T-5's were used in the Shiro Special Edition (SSE) 1988 300ZX Turbo from the factory. And yes it is stamped with B/W on the tailshaft.

Using your own words against you:
"Thanks for your comment, but the web isn't always correct...."
and such is the case here. I don't even care any more. Screw you and **** off. You don't believe me, fine. You don't believe Nissan's own parts ordering system, fine. You choose to believe a website that is a generalization about Z-cars written by people who don't necessarily know any better, fine. You choose not to believe a website that is truly dedicated to ONE model of the Z car family, one that has been around for the 8 years that I've owned my Z, one that will be around long after you wreck or sell yours? Fine. I'm done arguing with you. Go buy a farkin T5 short shifter. Have it not fit. **** and moan about it not fitting. Watch as I laugh at you.
In short? Have a nice farkin day! You're an idiot. I'm not here to make friends. If I wanted more friends, I'd kiss your ***. I'm here to give the best information available. I don't care if you do hate me. Really, I don't. You're another mindless dweeb roaming about the internet looking for quick answers to questions you could figure out for yourself if you took another 5 minutes. I don't care if you're 16 or 45. I don't care if you're built like Ross Perot or Arnold Schwarzenager. I don't care if you're white, black, purple, brown, yellow, etc. Chances of me caring now? None to less than none. I just feel like ranting and you're stupid enough to be in the way. Have fun finding a short throw.
Oh, and have fun figuring out how to mount that supercharger.
Dolt.
<font size="-1">note to moderators: feel free to edit as you please. I'm drunk and don't feel like dealing with stupid people tonight. Especially idiots who think they know more about their car than I do.</font>

I don't want to say who is wrong or write. But I have to say did you see that http://www.zhome.com/History/SSZ.htm reference a Shiro Special? (White Special for those that didn't know) Knowing that was a special edition car, could it have a different than it's same year counter part. It's just thought if it would stop the arguement. I mean, can't we all just get dunk, get laid, and get along.. Oh.. And drive the PHATTEST Z's while we're doing it? hahah

Re: Wanted: Short Throw T-5 Shifter
As to the original question, I believe that Victoria Br. has a short throw shifter kit that is designed for our cars specifically, and I also know that Motorsport has been working on one as well. The other possible outlet that you have is B&M. If I remember right, back in Jan. or Feb. they introduced a new shifter that was supposed to fit on Z31. I have know idea if it made production though, but it probably wouldn't hurt to look.
