Vibration

Hey all,

I have been looking at an 87T 5spd. to replace my lost ZX. The only question I have is that when the car is rapped up to about 4000 rpm, the shifter vibrates ALOT. Any input as to what this is? I was thinking input shaft, or bearing, is there something else it could be? Thanx!

Re: Vibration

The driveshaft is balanced at the factory. You might also check the transmission mount and the bolts which hold it on. It's a big rubber mount and I've seen them separate before, so that's another thought. It's also a possibility that it's the engine mounts, they are rubber also, with a "gel" inside, perhaps one or both have cracked and the gel dried up/leaked out, and any vibration of the engine is being carried to the transmission.

Hmmm, how hard is it to change motor mounts? I've pulled the tranny on my old z, so that I know is not to big of a deal, but I never had the motor out...

Re: Vibration

you should be able to jack it up from the oil pan, using a floor jack and a board between the jack and the pan (so you don't smush it). you might try and have a length of 2x4 or somethin similar handy so that you can pry/lean the engine to one side or the other to make things easier. each mount has a stud coming out of the top and bottom with a 14mm nut on each stud. If you have a hoist, you can lift the engine like that instead of using a jack.

Re: Vibration

spot laid it down perfectly, thats what i would check and do because actcually it wouldnt hurt to replace theses things since they probably havent been since the car was new. and thats not so good on a car thats 13 years old.

watch out here comes my Z V8 powered and ready to roar
