Speedometer issue

Im starting to have issues with my analog speedometer. My 86 base car is good but now the speedo starts bouncing around. It happens off and on. Some times the needle works properly. Other times it jumps way up. As soon as i start going in first gear the needle jumps to 45 mph and continues to race up to where its pegged all the way around. I read it could be a kink in the cable or needs to be lubed. Would it be easier to just replace the cable with a new one and if so what places have that old of a cable. If it is just a fix what would i have to donto it?

Cable replacement is the fastest repair, if it works. I would take the old cable off and to the parts store with me. That way, the ends will be compatible with whatever you buy. Install new cable, speedo will work right or not. If not, my guess is recycled speedo head unit from a recycler. Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market Recycler may want to sell you the whole gauge set. Cool.

Ok so the speedo issue is getting worse. It jumps right up to 85 mph before i am even out of first gear. it works properly only once in a while. Is there a way to just repair the cable or re grease it? Or, if someone on this forum would know where to buy a new one. I can't seem to find one. So if anyone has any advice or has had this issue please say something.

In the east there are chain auto parts places but with computers even the smaller shops have access to just about every part available. We have Auto Zone, Advance AUto, NAPA, etc. all here. I like to use the Nissan OEM part numbers when shopping. Parts stores usually find them helpful. Check XenonZcar.com

For a used OEM cable, recyclers. Find one in your area at Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market Maybe you can luck into a good body on the lot. Take your magic marker there and hand pick the parts you need.

so finally had a moment to pull the cluster out and check the gauge itself. There seems to have been oil traveling up the speedo cable. I tried using a stick and screw gun to turn the gauge. It went all the way around when gently turning the crank. I cleaned it out with contact cleaner and tried it again, the gauge seems to be operating properly. I don't know if i am able to get a new cable or if i can clean the existing one. It seems that the seal by the transmission for the cable is bad allowing oil to travel up the line. Any suggestions where I can get a new cable from or how to repair the existing one.
