Question About an 84 300zx Turbo

I'm doing a full rebuild on a 1984 300zx turbo 50th edition and I need to know what kind of stock turbo came with those models, also I would like to know what the two lines on top of the turbo are that are not the oil return or oil receivers, they look almost like lines that an oil dipstick tube would go into and they are parallel to each other on either side of the turbo itself.

Welcome to ZDriver!

Click: Basic 300ZX Z31 Information

It's a Garrett T3 turbocharger.
The other lines are the coolant lines.

Perfect! Thank you, now my other question is what do those two lines connect to?

I couldn't find anything on the turbo on that website, the other thing is, I thought that the turbo models until 1984 were oil cooled. Also I bought the right oil line hookup but I can't find the adapter for the oil pan, does anyone have an exploded setup view?

Did you even click on that link? You DOWNLOAD the FSM (Factory Service Manual).

Yeah I did and it does not have information regarding two banjo bolted aluminum lines coming from the turbo itself.

Weird. It took me less than 5 minutes (at work computer terminal mind you), to download the FSM, locate the turbocharger breakout, screenprint it, draw up some arrows, save it, and post it.

Thanks Nismo, what threw me off the most was that I always heard that 84 models were all oil cooled turbochargers and 85 is when they started to water cool them instead, now I suppose the question is where do those water lines connect to? Time to play around with the FSM some more I suppose.

Was a common retrofit to add coolant lines to the 84 models that idiots cooked the turbos on. Dealerships received TSBs on how to add the lines. Nothing to it.

So what do I do with these lines then? Just disregard them?

I don't get why you are asking this.

Why would you not just connect them to where they are meant to go?

Well where do they go then? I can't find any connections anywhere else unless they connect to an inter cooler which this model doesn't have.

There's a coolant line on the throttle body. One end goes to the throttle body to the turbo. The other comes from the turbo to wherever the other end went. It doesn't matter which way.

Here’s another web site with a fiche chart.

http://z31.com/fiche/2/e04.gif

Notice there are 2 exploded part diagrams of a turbo in the above link. Look at the upper diagram because you have an air cooled Garrett T-3 turbo which was used for the 1984 z31. It’s the same turbo used for the 1983 280ZX turbo. Starting in 1985, Nissan used liquid cooled turbos on the z31. All turbos are oil lubricated.

A cooling system diagram is shown in the 1984 Nissan Service Manual but it doesn’t show any detail. I think the cooling line that you’re referring to is on my car. I’ll have to look again. Don’t know why Nissan did that. Why install a cooling line that runs under the manifold towards the throttle body if it wasn’t going to be connected to the 1984’s air cooled only turbo?

The part you asked about, a turbo oil return hose from the turbo to the oil pan, is available. At least it was about a year ago when I ordered it from Nissan. Don’t forget to order the 2 hose clamps as well.

Before having my 1984 turbo rebuilt, I just went and ordered ALL of the turbo’s small connective parts. There are about 20 of them including bolts, gaskets, hoses, etc. in that diagram.

Surprisingly, Nissan had 17 of the parts but these 3 are NLA (No longer Available): the oil outlet banjo bolt, heat shield, and the oil inlet line (steel tube with a loop in it). I was able to order the oil inlet line from some other place. It was on back order and it took awhile.

Awesome, thanks for your help everyone...I have everything figured out except for one part, that would be the bolts that connect the oil feed to the turbo and to the engine block, I know I can get the ones that connect the oil feed to the turbo itself easily, I'm assuming that its just a generic banjo bolt right? That connect the oil feed to the block.

Alright, new issue here...I cannot seem to find for the life of me the right bolt that fits the oil feed to the block itself, I have all the others already but that one is preventing me from cranking this thing over. Any ideas? I believe it's a size 13 banjo bolt but nobody around here seems to have one.
