Re: POWER

While this will apply to the Z31 in general, I'm not sure on exacts as I own a Z32.

Here's some basics on turning up the boost on a turbo as to what happens to your engine:

Idea: To create more horsepower by turning up the amount of air the turbo forces into the combustion chamber

Problems:

When you turn up the boost, you push more air into the engine, which leans it out. When you lean out the engine you create more heat which is bad for your engine. Also you can create detonation which is defined as:

"When the combustion chamber pre-ignites, when you add fuel, pressure, and enough heat you don't need a ignition source."

So basically the cylinder pre ignites and since the cam, valves, and all are in the wrong position for exhaust/intake/etc, it's extremely damaging to your engine.

Solution:

One way to fight detonation is to cool the intake charge with an intercooler, and to dump more fuel into the cylinder, the fuel cools the air and fights off detonation. The problem is that your current fueal map is designed with stock boost. Once you turn up the boost you need to modify the fuel map, which is what the ECU replacement does on the ZTT.

If you are going to turn up the boost I would definetly get an intercooler before you do it simply cause it helps prolong your engine life, also upgrading the cooling system on your car would also be a suggestion. Anything to keep the car cool, espicially if it's a daily driver. Now in the ZTT you can get an eletronic boost controller that you can set for low/high boost settings.. So basically you can have a selectable boost setting which is great for when you want to have the power, and great for every day driving.

Monitoring your system:

Definetly install some gauges to monitor your car, such as a aftermarket boost gauge, and if you can get one and install it, and EGT (Exhaust Gas Temp) gauge, as this will help you identify when you are close to detonation.

Also you can get a AFC (fuel controller), and tune the car to help figure out how to get the most out of your car. Just make sure the dyno has a wideband O2 sensor so you can get proper readings on the fuel curve..

Uhh I think this is one of the longest posts on here hehe.. Probably missed some things but hey.. noone's perfect..

Re: POWER

Okay that's better. BTW, that K&N filter part # is re-0810 for a 9" cone shaped filter.
