Oil Pressure High?
Hi all. I just recently fixed my digital dash and now that everything is illuminated I noticed the oil gauge is at the highest level (bar). The oil pressure warning light above the digital "bar graph" is not on however so I'm wondering whats up? I've heard of low oil pressure but what would be the causes of high? I must mention that the car is just idleing and hasn't been driven since last summer. Will the gauge pressure most likely fall once driven....,should I drive it at all or is this most likely an oil pressure sensor problem? The car has been started here and there lately......,but never ran(idleing) for more than a couple of minutes. Thanks all, it's so

Re: Oil Pressure High?
The car hasn't been driven at all. If it is the sending unit, does the car run improperly? Where is the sending unit? When I say improperly, I mean has the cars computer been made aware of the supposed high pressure and compensated by tuning the engine to adapt to the problem? I drove this car last summer with out the dash lit so i'm wondering if the gauge was high then and if it is a true reading, would I not of blown the engine by now? Thx all, sorry if I sound too green....,LOL.
Re: Oil Pressure High?
usually a bad oil pressure sending unit will just read wrong. The car won't run any differently, the computer is for the fuel injection system. On both turbo and non 84-86's, it's located on the pass side, next to the oil filter (standing on the pass side, looking at the oil filter, it's to the left of it). If you have a Haynes manual, look on page 65, its item 6 in the picture.
From my '86 factory manual, here's the instructions to do an oil pressure check.
1. warm up engine.
2. stop engine and remove oil pressure switch.
3. install pressure gauge with sealant.
4. start engine and check oil pressure with engine running under no-load.
with rpms at:
1200 pressure should read 28
2000 pressure should read 43
4000 pressure should read 57
oil pressure at idling should be more than 11 psi
this test was with 10w-30 oil and oil temp between 77 & 83 Celuis. slight difference will be found because of oil viscosity or oil temperature. if difference is extreme, check oil pass and oil pump for oil leaks.
