New Z31 owner

Whats up? I'm Kennan, This red charm was just handed to me the other day from a nice older lady that I help from out from time to time. She starts up with a battery boost but she does make some kind of crazy noise if the rev the motor up, I can also smell some oil burning and see white smoke kind of like a seal might be busted or whatnot.

Anyways shes a 1985 300zx 5 speed with the 3.0 non turbo
I'll be looking at what to do first forums in the near future I think I read something like timing belt, water pump, tensioners, etc. for the first thing then look into the injector problem they may have had in the past?

Thanks guy look forward to being a part of the community. New Z31 owner-z1.jpg

Welcome to ZDriver!

Pick up your freebie docs at XenonZ31 Reference including a complete factory service manual. It has lots of cool inspection and troubleshooting pages, easy to follow.

Looks like a great find, sounds like she needs some work. Guys here have seen just about everything on a Z31 and can help you out when your posts are clear and contain the right info.

Thanks and welcome again.

Cool. FYI, Nissan recalled all the Z31s in the 90s, if I remember, to replace all the injectors (there were a few fires before that, I think, so Nissan played it very safe). I had mine done in a day even though my old ones seemed fine. Nissan is supposed to keep the VINs on record and the recall is likely still valid today.

So take your VIN to the nearest dealer and have them check. If the recall work was not done, you get to convince that dealer to do it today. His problem is that Nissan won't pay him enough to cover the work at today's labor rates, but that's not your problem. If he refuses, give the Nissan area manager a call or a letter. Once you go on the record, they are sorta in a bind and may change their mind. Technically, I guess Nissan is still responsible if the OEM injectors cause a serious problem.

Report back, OK?

So I talked to my nearest Nissan dealership today and they told me my vin is to old to call 1-800-Nissan1, So I did this and talked to an operator which comes to find out that it will take close to 2 business days to give me the answer if my car has had the injector problem fixed or not.

I went to O'reillys today picked up a new timing belt, serpentine belt, water pump, thermostat, tensioners, a chiltons book, and battery. I hope i'm not going wrong with buying from O'reillys or Napa and not Nissan.

Some guys prefer the complete timing belt kit from Courtesy Nissan (TX) because it has a couple more parts - and the belt has timing marks on it so you don't screw that up. I have no problems with aftermarket local parts stores since they let you return what doesn't fit. You'll probably be OK.

Let us know what happens with the injectors.

I understand about the whole visits thing, to be honest I'm not exactly sure why I ever said anything.

Today I got the new battery installed found a rubber hose line not hooked up will probably post something on it....and changed out the hydraulics that hold the hood up.

I love the car and all but I really liking the Datsun 280zx blah oh well. I bought another 300zx it's a 87 model and today I found out that a lot of stuff is not interchangeable not even the flipping wheels.

Thanks for the welcome and compliment on the car.

What brand of belt?

O'reilly's carries several brands of belts, but their main supplier (at least locally) is Dayco. I, personally, have not had the best luck with Dayco sepentine belts. They always have worn or separated quicker than any other brand. Consequently, I've never trusted the brand enough to use a Dayco timing belt. I've always stuck with OEM or Gates Rubber timing belts, which also happens to be a OEM supplier for a lot of auto companies. FYI, Gates also prints the timing marks and orientation arrow on their replacement timing belts.

I bought the Gates timing belt, Masterpro serpentine belt, Murrey Thermostat and still waiting on the waterpump and tensioners to come in. I just looked at the Gates belt and it does have the marks on it.

Thanks

To avoid frustration, this URL is as good a primer as any on the differences between your two Z31s:

ZBUM's Z31 Differences Page

The page doesn't discuss all mechanical differences. All 84-86 cars have A/B Series VG30E or VG30ET engines. 87-89 cars have W Series motors of the same designation. Some parts are swappable, some aren't, between the A/B and W Series. You've discovered 84-85 cars have 4-stud wheel hubs, 86 on were 5-stud hubs. There are other more subtle differences in most other components, but can be made to work in all cars with some adjustment.

So Nissan called today unfortunately I was not available but they left me message to let me know that the injector recall has been performed and taken care of on my car and even gave me the date and reference # to when it was done.

Yep, So now I have no use for this car sitting in my lot lol. I have not a clue on what to do with it but to try and sell it which I'm not having much luck on. The few things on there that I needed I can't use haha who would have thought

Thanks everyone.

TX is a pretty big state for Z fans - there are lots - so if the '87 is running it's worth at least what you paid for it. Not running at all? Part the big stuff out and then sell what's left as a parts car.

I paid $100.00 for it, but it has no motor or transmission it. It sat on craigslist for awhile before I found it now I have it. I'll see what I can do.

Are you from TX?

$100? No sweat. Check out Ebay for selling oddball car parts. Ebay Motors charges for ads, I think, but the misc car parts area doesn't. You could get $100 just for the tail lights. Post good clear photos there.

I'm from New England. I tried to visit TX last summer but my boots were stolen at a Kansas motel so they stopped me at the TX/OK border. Told me to go away. All I wanted was to get a real Texas cowboy hat, but what the heck...

Ebay not a bad idea. I guess I can see and try to get money out of the easy stuff then take it to get scrapped. If it would stop raining here in North Texas, then I might be able to work on her a little.

I'll send you a nice cowboy hat maybe one with a Dallas Star right in the middle just so you can where it around town lol.

Funny things seem to be up with the XenonZ31 site. Alternative site for the FSM is Index of /FSM/300zx/1985. I suggest you download the chapters onto your local PC.
