misfire under load, idles fine
So, for the past two weeks, I have been trying to track down this ignition problem in my 86 n/a 5 speed. It started out as an occasional misfire while driving down the road which quickly cleared up on its own, no less than 1/2 a mile down the road. It has progressively gotten worse since. Now the car will idle fine, but you can hear a misfire as you rev it past 1500. Misfire becomes more apparent with the A/C running as it loads the engine somewhat.
I have just replaced the entire ignition system (to my knowledge), which includes plugs, wires, entire distributor, cap, rotor, ignition coil, and the power transistor.
Before replacing these items, the computer was throwing code 21 (ignition signal missing in primary coil). I however have been unable to get that code to show up after replacing the parts, and resetting the ECU.
The problem still comes and goes, but for the most part it does't want to run.
Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Angle Senor?
Maybe the Angle Senor in the dis is on its way out. May be sending a chopped up signal out. With all them parts replaced. Least you have a code to work with, Cat probably good. Check and clean your connectors and grounds up. Good luck

Well, I have used two different distributors so far so I think I may want to look at the wiring again, I'm hoping something will pop out at me tomorrow.

Mine was acting the same way still trying to learn how to read the code lights in the ECU. Mine at one point had a good idle and under power was chopping up a bit then smooth out, now I have no idle LOL and my injectors are dumping way too much fuel. Have to mess with it to keep it running when cold then REV it out after warm up then its driveable but still runs not so good.

Some people say to change out the temp sensor near the timing belt. havnt read up on it enough to see if that would put out a code. On mine I know the air REG is bad and that would effect the idle some when cold but don't know if it would have a performance effect. Took mine off and put power to it watched inside for some time and it didn't move, the little heating element is bad.

Tried to post a larger image. But the code 21 leads to Pg.92 in the Shop Manual download that you can download from this site. This one came for the 88 Z31. Talking about a fuse or a fuse with a bad connection or a open or lose wire or connection going to the transmitter. May help

Thanks for that! I stumbled across that just before I went to sleep, followed the flow chart the next day. According to the flow chart, I needed an ECU. It was right... Replaced the ECU with a 5 speed n/a that was made the same month as mine, and it has been happy since!
Thanks!
Thanks!
