it may just need something simple as a tuneup. even a small vacuum leak will affect performance in these cars. If you're willing to do a bit of work yourself, then having one of these cars can be very rewarding. If you pay a shop to do everything for you then you might want to start picking up any and all change you find in parking lots and such! There are a few good sites that can give you a hand with it though, including this one. z31.com and zcar.com also have a good list of readers/owners and someone on one of them will have encountered any problem you come up with already.
If you're looking for speed though, hold out and look for a turbo. If it comes to be more of a headache then you want, you shouldnt have a problem selling it for 1000 and getting most if not all of your money back.
You always have us to help you out though.
hope this helps

Just be ready for things to go on the car. I bought a 86 na last december and already put $1200 into it. I'm finding out if you can do alot of the repairs yourself, you'll save big bucks. The engines on these cars are ever so sensitive, too many componets, electrical system mirrors that of the space shuttle I believe. Find a good mechanic that specializes in these cars. The aveage joe knows very little.
Good luck

If you have access to some tools and a manual for the 300ZX you can do a lot of the repairs yourself. I've done some work on my Z and I have also spent the money to have my mechanic that specializes in Japanese cars do some work for me. If you don't want to spend a lot of money on your car make sure the engine is strong.

Go do simple things to test it out. Go have the compression checked. Drive it. See if the tranny is strong. When you buy it, go get the belts changed. For a $1000, you can't go wrong. Hell, you'd be hard pressed buying a broke down Geo Metro for that price.. haha. Well ok. you could, but you wouldn't have as much fun. (Trust me) I got my 87 for $1800. I couldn't have found a better deal. So for a grand, you can't go wrong. And as stated above, there's a lot of work you can do on your own. (I do and it saves me a bundle, plus, to me it fun and makes the car even more mine)
