How to work temperature controls?

I have owned my car for some time now and this is embarrassing, but with my 1988 Z31how do I set the controls to blow the A/C or heat out of the front vents? There are economy and defrost and auto setting, but it is impossible to select just the floor or window vent settings and I have read the entire car manual on this.

My 87 has your package with the supposedly better heat & Ac control. I agree with you, not intuitive at all. With my 88 the manual controls were simple. Although there are certain things I appreciate in the electronic controls like outside temp and being able to set exact internal temp. Otherwise, I prefer the manual. I'll play around today and see what I can figure because I had the same question.

I'll be damned! I tried every combination and the air will not come out of the front vents.
I can't imagine the system is that smart to say heat will not come out of front vents but AC will.

I am stuck!

I have tried everything and just think it is automatic and determines itself by the temperature inside and out.

I got the vents to work today. I guess with the elevated temperatures the vents went on?
But, I felt the vents..although not exclusively, were shooting air. In other words, the vents in front and the floor and windshield, as indicated in the icons.
Yesterday it was 19 degrees today is 32 a major difference.

Yes, today here it is 9 degrees and in the summer the A/C came out the front vents. I suppose I will just wait and see when summer hits.

Most of the Climate controled HAC units , restrict airflow out the vents, until the heater core warms to a sufficient temp so as not to make you colder . I beleive that yr is the same .

Our system actually does not even go on until the core is warm. In other words, you do not get cold air in the winter when you turn it on, the system does not go on. It seems when it was in the 30's the vents blew. Today with temps in the teens they did not blow.
