I wish I could buy new parts for my Z but unfortunately at this time im on a tight budget. Im doing well on a lot of repairs with the help of this website. About a month ago, my right front brakes were giving out, the mechanic said he needed to replace the rotor and caliper. I've gone to this guy over the years and trust him fairly well. Anyway he wants to charge about 280.00 dollars to do both rotors and brake pads and right caliper I believe. Anyway I enjoy working on my Z, everyone says its easy to do the front brakes, I have Haynes, Z31.com, and a mechanic in the family if I need to ask a question. So I hear that the rotor is not something you can really buy for say an upgrade. In other words a rotor is rotor. The pads I'll buy will be Axxis Metal Master Pads(thanks Spot) which seem to be a better quality than this mechanic would have put on my Z. Now rotors are 75.00 each(1986 non turbo) that's kinda alot, can I get a rotor at a pick a part? Is this ill advised. Is this something where the risk of buying a bad rotor is great? In other words, should the rotors be brand new like brake pads should be? We currently just put new brake pads on them temporarily until I can afford the real brake job. It's funny but he said that for 280.00 dollars he would do a real professional job. I know that's something that should be implied when you pay somebody to do a job, but I think he was meaning about turning the rotors,making sure everything is greased up and stuff.
