84 Z keeps dying
I just bought an 84 300Z (non-turbo) a few months ago. WOW what a fun little car, but the problem is that as I am driving, it will just die out. Sometimes it will immediately start back up othertimes I'll have to let it sit for a few hours to get it running again. I have replaced the fuel filter, plugs and wires, even taken it to the local nissan dealer--what alot of help they were-- I can't figure it out. Maybe it is something in the fuel injection...I dunno. Any help?

could be a dying fuel pump. also run the codes on the computer and see what it tells you. most (if not all) the sensors on the car can be tested. some procedures are in the haynes manual (not sure if all of them are in there). the factory service manual should have all the procedures.

Re: 84 Z keeps dying
check your alternator. Start the car up, and unplug the battery, if it run's w/o the battery then your alternator is fine. But if it died out once you pull the battery, then its your alternator.

Re: 84 Z keeps dying
My 84 300zx did that too, it would start sputtering all of a sudden, i had my MAS (mass airflow sensor) replaced and it did squat, dont bother with that, cuz it wont work!! i did my plugs timing fuel pump filter and the rest of teh obvious and NEVER figured it out, i would actually be really interested to know what that problem is, cuz i sure never found out

Re: 84 Z keeps dying
Mine died on me 3 times in the span of a week, I figured it was the gas I purchased. It would run and just die for no reason at all when I was driving, but would start up and run fine. I never purchased fuel from Shell again, always stick with Exxon. Also I used a fuel system cleaner. It could be something with your injectors, but I would not replace those if you never done it before.

Little late from the looks of the last post, but my car does the same thing, as some of you might have noticed from the last few posts of mine. I can't figure it out. I think my alternator is actually going bad due to the squealing sound it has made for the last few months. Sure wish I could try disconnecting the battery while it's running to test out that theory before I go buying a new alt. If any of you original posters of this thread figured out the solution to the problem by all means post a reply.

by the way, check your air filter, if you have a K&N try putting the factory setup back in the car. I think it has something to do with the intake getting too much air. Yeah I know, doesn't really make sense, but think about it. If for some reason there is somthing wrong with you throttle body or other intake related component then too much air might be related to the car dying out. Maybe some how the computer is telling the injectors to put too much fuel into the system or something, heck I'm not too sure, just my slightly eduacated guess

I'm no expert but......
You could be having a problem with your A.A.C.
(auxillery air control valve) It will also depend on the T.V.S.
(throttle valve switch), and the M.A.F.(mass air flow sensor)
If you have a volt meter test these for continuity. If you don't
know how, any parts store should have a helpful manual.
Just about any good quality manualtells you about the
computer test codes. If you have the patience......
Remove the pass. side kick panel, here you will find your
computer. Do a self-diag. on the computer. It will give you
codes, the codes tells you what's wrong.
