84 AE Horn

I thought this would be simple but..I had to take of the steering wheel when I pulled the dash. Now, after checking connections and everything working but for the horn and the radio controls.

I checked the fuse and the horn relay, both checkout OK. I know the horn works because of when the alarm is set off.

I made certain to reseat the wheel nicely to match up with the ring underneath.
I figure something is not right with the contact of the wheel with the ring..

any suggestions?

not sure but it seems like there is a ground wire attached with a spade connector. I might however be thinking of a different Z. They all blend together after a time. have you checked for power at the horns. they be two and are always powered. the horn button just goes to ground to complete the circuit so get out the trusty VOM and check for power at the horn. also test the horns. I had one out didn't know it. second went south and I'm wtf. be sure everything is working before you blame the horn button.

When I pull off the wheel..there is nothing connected. I.e. once the nut is off and I wiggle the wheel it comes off with no connectors attached. The questions now is; is something supposed to be attached before the wheel can be removed (pulled off and away from the column)?

sorry can't remember and not gonna disassemble mine to find out got to go to ground somehow to make the horns work. Maybe it grounds thru the steering column and there is ground wire on it but it has to have a wire from the horn to the horn button that gets grounded somehow. did you look in the fsm??

Looking at it now..but it is not showing in the drawings..
I see that one can lubricate the steering wheel..I presume this gets rid of the noise when turning all the way
left or right..How wold one describe that sound?

Thx

Donn

slide it down

There is some up and down play in how it seats and makes contact, if you don't get it down all the way the horn wont work, happened to me, I think you might need to move the combo switch up a bit to get them closer, I don't remember a spaded wire, but it's been a while.

OK got it! Predator you ARE correct. However, what a ridiculous setup\design!
Every time I put the steering wheel back on, it pushed the switch back..The frustration level was reaching the ceiling. I would get the sweet spot with either the horn or the radio controls working..seldom did I get both. I'd tighten the wheel and the connection would get lost..

Finally, after much consideration..I put the wheel on first..then I moved the controls up..pushing as hard as I could and tightened the controls down. This way with the wheel on, it would not move the controls..rather bring the controls up to meet the wheel.
Here's hoping it holds.;

one of the plastic fingers on the combo switch mount has a bump that is supposed to engage a hole in the steering column to correctly position same. Yours may be broken off.

I did see the hole..but did not sense the bump..but if the mount is too far down the column..there's no connection. For such an important thing..there seems to be very little tolerance, that is what got to me! You'd think once the wheel is put on..and you have a click and tightened..
away you'd go..simple and straight forward..but no!
What else is new?
