What size wheels?

I have a friend who just purchased an 89 300ZX non-turbo - hog leg. He picked it up in Phoenix Az and drove it back to Georgia - problem free.
He wants to put wheels and low profile tires on it. Does anyone know with 17" wheels, what width wheel and size tire can he put on it without scrubbing? he wants a lot of tread on the ground. any suggestions? thanks

As far as I know you can put a 9.5" up front(the widest ive seen), and I would guess a 12" out back max, depending on offsets.

The stock tire size translated to a 17" tire is: 225/45/17. Thats the same diameter as a 225/50/16.

Oh GOD NO! WRONG. BAD. Don't do that. 12" wide? Where did you pull that number from?

i had a set of 18's on my z and the tires were 275/40/18's on the back. they were about 10 1/2 inches wide, they fit but i would say that would be the max width at stock height. any lower and they would rub.
yeah it was dumb, yes i regret it, no it will never happen again.
