Best tires and what size for new wheels...

Just bought a set of two peice SA3A Advan wheels. 17x8 up front and 17x9 in the back.

I wanted to get some Advan tires to match my wheels but at $300 a tire its a little out of my price range. So I am pretty set on Khumos but have some questions.. I want a high performance summer tire and Khumo offers two of them, the ECSTA Supra 712 and the ECSTA SPT. Not that it makes any difference but in most sizes the SPT is like $3 more. Not sure which one to go with or what the difference between the two are?

Im not quite sure what tire size would be best for a 17x8 and 17x9 wheels? I see alot of people run 245/45/17's on 17x9? I dont want there to be any buldge or for them to be stretched, If possible I would like to get them completely flat on the sides.

Id greatly apreciate any help
Thanks
Rob

245/40/17 on a 17x9 wheel would be a better choice. Tire diameter will be identical to stock and width will be about 9.65" which is a identical to your true wheel width, measured from outer to inner lip. For the front a 225/40/17 would sit well on the 17x8 wheel if you don't mind a smaller diameter front tire than your rear tire, about 1/2" shorter. As for tires I've read alot of good feedbacks on the Kumho V700 and V710. Some consider these tires best for the track or autocross. Downside is you'll be buying a new set about every 5000 miles especially if you run them on the street. For everyday street use and track use every now and then I would go with Nitto N555RII. I am trying to decide on what wheels to get myself. Post some pics of you 17s when you get them on the car. I'd really want to see how those would look. What offset are they anyways, +0? and how much do they weigh?

Thanks for the help. What are you looking at for wheels. I have a feeling these are the kind of wheels not everyone will like the look of but I really like them. I wanted something kind of rare. Down the road I might take them off and paint the centers the same color as my car, but I think the white will look cool with my blue paint.

I looked into 225/40 and 245/40 tires. Theres a much smaller selection, infact I cant find anyone who makes a 225/40/17. So how bad would it be if I went with 45's? I apreciate how you figured out all the math for because I dont quite understand how you do that.

I didnt want to go with the V700 or V710 because this is primarily a street car. Also my budget is a little tight which is why I liked the idea of the cheaper models. Yokohama makes a high performance summer tire called the AVS ES100 that is relatively inexpensive, have you heard anything about these tires?

thanks
Rob

I agree on limited tire choices for 17" wheels. This is why I am really considering 16s, more tire choices on 225 and 245 widths. Here's how you break down the tire size.
225/40/17
width in inches = 225/25.4 = 8.86
sidewall = width*aspect ratio = 8.86*40% = 3.54
diameter = sidewall*2+wheel diameter = 3.54*2 +17 = 24.09

Really? I had 16's and there were almost no tire choices. 17 and 18 had many sizes available.

You can't get a wide low profile tire for 16s. 245/45/16 is pretty much the only choice. I'd stay away from 16's.

225/50/16 front and 245/45/16 rear - lots of tire choices. This set up keeps tire diameter as close to stock as possible. On 17s you'll have to go to 225/45/17 and 245/40/17 and for 15s you'll have to go with 225/55/15 and 245/50/15, not much tire choices on these 15 and 17 sizes. IMO 15" wheels look to close to stock and 17 looks to big for an old school car likt the Z or ZX, but that's just me.

ya, those two you mentioned were what I would of had to use on my 9 and 10 inch wide wheels. I wanted anything wider... like 255/265/275 in 35 or 40 series for 16 inch and they just don't exist except maybe in special order race tire but I don't count paying $400 each for tires as an available size.

i got federal brand tires. they are 150 a piece mounted and install canadian price. 245 is the way to go. (i went 255) once you got the new wide rubber on, your low speed cornering goes for a crap on ya until the rear springs are stiffened considerably. both rod and i can attest to that.

Im getting a little worried about my suspension not being sufficient. But I have been talking with Ross and once I get my new wheels and tires on, my intake manifold on and my car running good I am going to get some coilovers from him. Unless someone offers me a decent amount for my pretty much brand new Tockico shocks/springs, then I will get some coilovers ASAP. His prices are very reasonable. When were you plainning on getting your coilovers Shady?

It seems like it never ends... Lord knows once all this stuff is done Im going to want some better brakes....

Bleach is right, 16's don't have enough tire choices for me especially in the R compounds.

15's for R compound selection and 17's for street tire selection is awesome.

I just put a new set of 15" wheels on my wifes Subaru Outback. Each wheel weighs in at 13.2 lbs! Try that in a 17 inch wheel (or an 18 Rod!).

I paid $563 for all four wheels and four Kumho ECSTA ASX's mounted and balanced with free installation (by me!).

The car will accelerate better, stop better and get better gas mileage with the reduced rolling mass of the light weight wheels and tires.

The ECSTA Supra 712 is discontinued and is being replaced with the SPT.

P.S.
I like the look of your Advan's, but I'm curious how you're gonna get those onto a 4 lug hub?

Ohhh ****!!! my car is a 4 lug!!!! I completely forgot!!!

Just kidding, thanks for compliment on the wheels. Im going to use modern motorsports adaptors.

That is what I did like about my Rewinds, they were very light. But I think the 17's will look a lot better and the big thing was the width of the wheels. the 7's just werent cutting it. I think the 9inch rear wheels will really fill out my wheel well nicely.

For the tires I am definately going to go with the Khumo ECSTA SPT's. With a 225/45/17 front tire and either a 245/40/17 or 245/45/17 rear tire. Im not sure what will look best
