? for ZBUM
When you made your wiring diagram for stereo harnesses, mine doesnt appear to be entirely the same. Can you help me out?
Red w/ green stripe =
Yellow w/ green stripe =
Yellow w/ blue stripe =
Yellow w/ red stripe =
Red w/ blue stripe =
Red w/ black stripe =
Blue w/ red stripe =
I went to my Nissan Dealer and they found a 1989 FSM, but it spoke of white colors on the front speakers and I dont have that, then I downloaded the 88 FSM from carfische.com for free, and it had the same layout as the 89. I do have the stereo controls on my steering if that helps. These colors I have listed above are from the loose wires were some idiot cut of the factory connector inside the dash.

fill in the blanks with this:
http://www.az-zbum.com/information.stereo.shtml
then buy a haynes manual and read it.
then fill in the blanks with that.
then come back and ask question about what you're stuck on.

Blue w/ red stripe = 12V Battery

Got this from your sheet.
Will recheck my manual in a second.

I guess this is the end of the road on this one. The colors on my stereo harness, only half match any known documentation. From what I can conclude, it is now impossible to use the factory wiring to install an aftermarket stereo in a 300zx. Atleast I can use the 12v and the ignition wire and the illumination wires from my harness.
hypothetical question,
do you think its possible to run the speaker wires for the front speakers only to the white plugs on either side of the dash? instead of trying to fish them through the doors and all that crap?
Thanks again,

No, actually this isnt my first time installing a stereo, but I now think I have figured this out.
I recommend to all people who own a Z31 and plan on doing stereo work to your car, to register you car on ZBUM's Z31 registry.
This helped me to figure out what model I had. I own a GLL model 300ZX.
I also realize now I have an amplifier under my passenger seat. By using the 1988 diagrams for the stereo and the steering wheel switch assembly, I was able to figure out this wiring mess.
There are no separate speaker wires that run through the dash for the separate speakers. It is a DIN cable that connects the speakers through the amp to the radio. I found after market speaker wires running from the dash to under the seat to another mutilated white harness plug and an unplugged amp.
The four wires I had difficulty in determining in what they do are for the steering mounted controls via the LED system which I dont plan on using.

This is what I have done to make things a little easier and restore some of the plug and play function of the harness.
This will allow you to use those aftermarket Nissan stereo adapters off of ebay.
I bought from the junk yard a 1987 Nissan Maxima's radio harness. Unfortunately, its not removable so you have to cut it. Cost $5.00
Connect your aftermarket ebay connector to it which allows you to confirm the wiring connections.
Connect the pink wire on the donor to the yellow w/green stripe wire from the ZX harness = 12V ignition
Connect the red w/ green stripe wire on the donor to the blue w/ red stripe wire from the ZX harness = 12V battery
Connect the black wire underneath the pink wire on the donor to a new splice in the black wire on the ZX harness= ground.
Connect the green w/ white stripe wire on the donor to the Green w/ black stripe wire (on separate blue connector) = power anntenna timer lead.
Since I dont plan on using the steering mounted control wires, you should have left...
Yellow w/ red
Yellow w/ green
Red w/ yellow
Red w/ blue
(tape them up) dont need them and too expensive to adapt.
Since I dont need the illumination feature since most stereos are on all the time anyways. You should have left..
Red w/ green
Red w/ black
(these wires on mine used to have the two light bulbs on them, I cut them at the joint and taped it up. No need to light what I cant see.)
Now all that you should have left on the donor plug is
black w/ white (top)
black w/ white (top)
black (bottom)
black (bottom)
(1 top and bottom set is the front left, and the other set is front right. Use the AM harness to confirm which is which.)
Using new wires ( label them before running them), connect together the wires from the donor plug to the new wires, and connect new wires to the rear plug that came with the AM harness. Run those wires to the AMP under the passenger seat. Splice these new wires to the appropriate wires below.
Front speaker Left
Positive = Blue w/ white stripe
Negative = Blue solid
Front speaker Right
Positive = Red w/ white stripe
Negative = Red solid
Rear speaker Left
Positive = Light green w/white stripe
Negative = Light green w/ black stripe
Rear speaker Right
Positive = Red w/ green stripe
Negative = Red w/ yellow stripe
By doing this, you allow yourself the ability to remove your CD player or what have you, without all the mess of cutting and splicing each time.

I just finished the wiring, tightening up everything, man it looks nice, and sounds good, although I do have a bad rear speaker. Its nice to have the dash somewhat back in order again.
Yes, I have a working clock, that was on the other end of the harness which was still in factory condition. I do have 2 DIN cables in my dash. One from the reciever and one from the amp. I still do not have cruise control. I thought I read somewhere that you lose CC if you dont have the DIN cable plugged up to the stereo? I bought some Audiobahn speakers for the rear, they were real cheap, but now I next plan is to make some wood speaker mounts for the back and cover them in tan vinyl so match the trim.
I also have a date this saturday to drive to Illinois and pick up a 5spd tranny for my summer swap I am planning.
thanks.
