speedometer problem
My 1986 300zx has speedometer problem. The speedometer is reading much faster than the speed that the car is travelling at. For example, when I am going at approx 25 mph, the speedometer is pointing at 55 mph or even higher. This incorrect speedometer reading is intermitten though.. sometime, the speedometer will read correct speed.
From reading messages, the speedometer cable was mentioned. I don't know where this cable is. Where does it connect to??

wait wait wait.....HAHAHAHAH youre killing me 86...hold on.....IN the transmission....CLOSE to the diff....first off the diff is at the REAR wheels...that big round thing in between the wheels under the car...the tranny is connected to the engine...round 6 feet away from the diff...IM NOT MAKING FUN OF YOU...IM HELPING 86...IM SORRY I REALLY AM NOT AN *** HOLE I DONT WANA come across that way but just make sure youre responding to a question properly...he is correct tho about the cable connecting to the tranny...its not a simple cable tho, its a connection to the tranny (an electrical connection) and inside the tranny is a little gear i believe...the faster it spins the higher the speed readout is...on z31.com they should have some good pics of this..check it out

i dont get it but ya ok...id have to look for the connection ive never dun tranny work and i dont look forward to doing so...but ya...its in the tranny shouldnt be more than one ore two connectors...should be one...

Needle type z31 speedos from '86 backwards are mechanically / cable driven
Needle type z31 speedos from '87 forward are 'digitally' / electrically driven
ALL Digital speedo sending units are mechanically / cable driven, converting the signal to electric from the sending unit that's mounted by the passenger strut tower.
The '84-'86 speedos have the cable running from the tailshaft all the way into the rear of the instument cluster.
The main difference is the speedo pinion unit mounted in the tailshaft of the tranny.
For all cable units, digital or needle, the O-rings (there are two... one external and one internal) on the speedo pinion can get leaky, allowing gear oil to migrate up the cable and into the back of the speedo unit in the dash cluster.
That can gunk up the works and cause erratic readings.
That's one of the main reasons they switched over to an electical sending unit which stopped the contamination of the dash cluster. The cool thing is that the O-rings can be replaced and the speedo cleaned out.
You'll just have to pull the unit out to clean it.
Oh... and the tranny tailshaft and diff are not 6 feet apart seeing as the driveshaft is only about 3 feet long.
Don't worry though... you didn't come across as an *******. Just mis-informed.
