I've got an 87 n/a that will not produce any heat. The blower works fine and my coolant level is good. What else could be the problem?

 

I am answering your post because nobody else has, not because I know that much about heaters. You might hope that the because the fan can blow air and the coolant level isn't empty that the warm coolant level is actually reaching the heater core where the energy transfer takes place. I haven't got a clue where the heater core is, but I'm taking a wild guess and thinking that it's blocked up and that the hot water from your coolant system isn't making it through that critical area.

You haven't by any chance noticed an unexplainable sweet smell coming from your carpet, have you?

 

Thanks for the reply. No, no sweet smell and no wet spots under the dash. However, you may be right about the blockage. I was subsequently told that there is a valve(regulator?) in the engine bay that may not be working.

 

take your car to a radiator shop then, have them power flush the entire coling system including the heater core.

if the cooling system has not been flushed for years. coolant looks good but the internal vital parts of the cooling system is still dirty and this causes a problem to stop coolant from smooth flowing through the heater core.

this might be the easiest thing you can try

do not go to jiffy lube or wal mart , or other local garage to do this job . most of those shops do not power flush the system . they just replace the coolant using their machine.

when i took my car ro see how accurate the job is.

after they flushed the system i still se some deposits in the cooling system . this problem has not been solved till i took my car to a different shop and have them power flush the entire cooling system, plus back flush the heat core. see if this cures a problem.

 

Spot nailed it on this one. The water **** valve is vacuume operated. If it doesn't open then you won't get any coolant to the heater core and therefor no heat.
