Z31 Lsd

I was looking in a local junk yard today and I found an 87' 300ZX Turbo. It looks the motor caught on fire, the turbo looks to still be on it but its burnt pretty bad. Well The rear end was pulled out sitting on the top of the car ready to be put in their warehouse.

From what I remember its the 87' that had the CLSD but is there any way to make certain its LSD? I have the VIN number if that helps?? I asked and they only want about $200 for so it was going to go back and grab. I forgot what theyre going for now and theres none on ebay, is that a decent price?

Also I forgot exactly what else is needed to do the swap if someone could help with that too. Maybe a link??

Thanks in advance,
Rob

87 - 89 Z31T's had the LSD's. The 88 SS had the viscous, all others were clutch. The LSD came w/ a finned cover. If you can get the cv's, pop them in & turn one side, to make sure the other turns the same way. But the finned cover will be the major give away.

You don't need anything but the R200 LSD pumpkin to do the swap... everything bolts right up. You use your stock cv's.

$200 from a junk yard... $700 from ebay. Thas a tough one....

and what do you mean by "all of it" ? The pumpkin is all of it.

REMEMBER: THE 88 SS HAS THE VISCOUS, WHICH REQUIRES DIFFERENT CV SHAFTS

$200 is a killer price. They go for $600 - $700 now on ebay. It should still be in good shape, unless the car has like 400,000 miles and was used as a drifter all it's life.

Nismo, Thanks for all the help, im going to get it tommorow. And I started a new job so it looks like ill also be ordering everything for Megasquirt very soon. And other then the fact that the entire front end was burnt every thing including the interior was in wicked good shape and it didnt seem like it had many miles so it should be in good shape.

To use an aftermarket (kaaz) all you need is the differential housing from a z31 and it bolts up to everything right?

I just got back from the junk yard. Turns out that thing has been sitting there for quite some time. The guy said he "just wanted it out of site" so he told me to take for $150. I just took the entire rear end with the brakes and everything. I checked the car had 63,318 miles on it and was bone stock so it should be in good shape. The funny thing is the guys their thought they were screwing me over or something, only if they new.

Thanks for the help
Rob

Why thank you.. but like i said they thought they were ripping me off, cause they sold my friend a jetta rear end for his MK2 for like $70 and they figured mine wasnt worth nothing either.

im going to call them next week asking for a 300zx turbo differential.. and when they tell me they just sold one, Ill ask how much they sold it for and ill tell them how much there worth. haha thatll make em mad

Lets not do anything you might regret later on down the road. Lets say another one pops up.. . . . Think resale value my friend. You could make some easy money. Dont let them in on the game!

On my way home from work today I saw that a Z31 turbo was on the back of a wrecker pulling into the Junkyard here, looks like I'll be paying a visit to the ole junkyard this weekend.

With a Z31 pumpkin already installed, is it easy to use z31 parts to fully convert the rear to 5lug? Or is it a pretty big job swapping to 5lug even with the rear end?

The rear Z31 trailing a-arms are not exactly the same as the 280ZX. The S130 uses a coil over the strut. The Z31 has the coil spring separate from the strut and the Z31 strut mounts slightly further back and at least 2 inches lower on the a-arm. I have heard that you can install the Z31 a-arm onto the S130 crossmember but I have no pics and have not verified this myself.

The Z31T LSD swap is just that... swapping the pumpkins. You're not using any other parts from the Z31. Just drop the 280zx diff & replace it w/ the Z31 diff.
