The # on the speedometer has nothing to do with the top speed of the car. If it did, my mothers 1978 Mercury station wagon would go 150mph!

In 1980, the US DOT mandated that no auto speedometers would indicate greater than 85mph in a vain attempt to curtail street drag racing or joy riding by punk kids in their daddy's muscle cars. They thought if you didn't know how fast you were going, you wouldn't try to go faster than the speedo.

I don't remember exactly when it was lifted, I think it was in about 1985 but I could be wrong.

A common 'upgrade' on 1980 through 1983 ZX's is to swap in a 1979 130mph speedometer.

I have three 1979 130mph speedometers if anyone is interested...

Also, the ZXR does have the same engine and transmission as the 79-80 cars anyway. The 280ZXR is not a high performance Z. Its a stock Z with stickers and a whale tale... kinda like a ricer.

Ok, Bleach is right, but he left the important part out of his description.

The ZX-R was marketed specifically to sell a 1000 cars with the wing so it could be homologated for racing.

Many 'Stock' racing classes require that for any part to be legal in racing it must have been manufactured and sold in a minimum number to the public in order for it to be considered a 'factory' option.

Datsun sponsored racing needed to legitimize the new wing so the 'ZX-R' was created to satisfy the 1000 lot sales figure to make it considered a valid 'factory' option.

Essentially, it was a body kit (rear wing) and a graphics kit and sold as a special edition.

the closest one to that body kit was the kaminari wide body kit that was made in the mid 80's but you cant buy that kit anymore or are there anymore out there... from what i heard was the warehouse that held the mold for that kit burned down... i remember back in 92 i wanted that kit for my car and called kaminari and they told me they no longer sold it...

I have the Kaminari kit on my z and Kaminari was selling the molds for the kit about 2 years ago to anyone who wanted to purchase it. If the mold still exists, they would produce the kit if they had enought orders. I ordered a front bumper for my z in '00 and got one for $275 plus freight.

I have the Electromotive kit in my back yard. I had it up on ebay about 2 years ago and the person who won the auction thought it was for a 260 vs a 280. He didn't buy it, but paid for the relisting fees.

I was thinking about selling it again...but I'm not sure if I'm going to complete the conversion. The wheels have to be custom made to accomodate the width of the front and rear fenders. The only piece I'm missing from the kit is the front air dam, side skirts, and rear spoiler.

Will post pics in my album in the next few days..

I've posted pictures of the electromotive body kit in my gallery. Feel free to view them.

well, lets say i ws to put the electromotive kit on my z, couldnt i use the honda adpaters and use a 4x100 bolt pattern wheel that was already out there, if there is such a wide wheel? how much wider of a wheel do you need?

Do you mean use the Honda adaptors on a RWD offset wheel so it sticks out further than the stock fenders?

In theory I think that'll work fine. You migh be putting added stress on your wheel bearings... maybe. Also, use 7 or 8 inch width. Wider than that and you're into custom made or race applications. You can have those kind of wheels made with any offset you want so spacers aren't needed.

well if i was to use that kit, i would assume that custom made wheels are just a bit out my price range, but thats just a guess. is there a datsun bolt pattern wheel out there that would be wide enough to fit those fenders? i dont even know how wide i would need to go, i was just curious cuz i liked the kit. and if the price was right, i would def consider it.

Look for used wheels. Probably 15"x7 is the largest you'll find from some of the old school styles that bolt right onto the Datsun. The early Toyota RWD Celicas also used the same 4-lug pattern. Celica owners are hard pressed to find nice wheels just like we are.

The wheels I have on my car right now might be what you want. 15x7 with about zero offset. New wheels in 4x4.5 are not made in RWD format except for Panasports or Minilite but we're still talking top dollar for those $200-250 each. However, I believe you might be able to get Panasports in 16x8 inch sizes. The bigger you go, the more that cost per wheel jumps up.

i wasnt necessarily gunna go bigger, just wider. to fit those oversized fenders. but like i said, i dont even know how much wider the wheels would have to be. if a custom rim is required, i woulnt even consider the kit right now.
