What's a "competition" license plate frame/mount?

I a "competition" 280ZX license plate frame mount on Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...e=STRK:MEWA:IT
It had several bidders on it and went for over $30! I'm just wondering what's so special about it. The seller couldn't tell me the difference and said that it was found in the Nismo catalog or something. Any ideas? Aerodynamically "better" maybe?? (yes, yes, the "adds horsepower" jokes are amusing, but doesn't answer the question)

Super aero-dynamic!!!!! Can't 'cha see the awesome, wind-splitting characteristics that have been painstakenly engineered into the sides of this frame? That's got to make the aerodynamically challenged 280ZX grip the road better due to the tremenous and adjustable downforce it creates. Atleast that's what "zxramman" must believe. It just proves that a fool and his money are easily parted.

Looks pretty cheesy to me. I don't know why it would be considered a competition part. Aero wouldn't really play into it since the plate still sits flat on it drag wouldn't be reduced and those little aero sides wouldn't provide any aerodynamic affect at all either. Maybe it did come out of the Nismo catalog but I doubt it has any performance. You can walk into Nissan and buy a frame plate that says Nismo, but that doesn't make it a performance part.

There is no such thing as a 'Competition' license plate. You wanna know how I know? Because you DON'T need a license plate in competition!!

It's those big #'s on the side of the car that matter, not the little one's on the front and back that the timing tower couldn't even see!

This is the only valid competition license plate:

In the 80's the more accessories and crap you stick on your car, the better it is.

I'm sure the 30 dollar bid was by someone who believes this... or maybe just an old Z-nut, wanting every piece of historZ

There was obviously more than one person interested in that item, so I am wondering why. Perhaps it sits in a different position or something.

It probably has that NLA appeal from an old Nissan Cataloge more likely than not. I doubt it has any thing to do with competition or even cosmetic reasons that it sold other than someone having to have something from back in the day that you can't get anymore.

Its not a rediculous price. Its only 30 bucks.
The chrome NISMO license plate frames that say "Z" or "Fairlady Z" are 29.99 I think from Nissan. They are usually displayed on the wall of the parts counter area.
