Wanted Real Soon: 280zx Slick Top!!!

Howdy fellow Z lovers. FYI, I'm looking for a slick top 280zx for my everyday driver, I had one several years ago which I loved!!! Unfortunately during an engine swap the mechanic pulled a fast one on me and installed a maxima engine which was a 2.6L engine blah blah blah. I drove it for a year after that but was so disappointed in it's performance that I traded it in for a 89 Supra which is long gone. Since then all my jobs have provided a vehicle and gas for me; however I'm getting ready to take a job that does not provide the vehicle or gas but are compensating in salery. But I don't want a car payment so I'm getting the only true car I ever loved (Besided the Countach which I can't afford). I don't want to have to do much if any work on this to get it road ready and the A/C must work, I'm in Texas for goodness sake. If anyone can help me out or get me pointed in the right direction it would be appreciated. Sorry for the long post!!!

The most abundant years of slick tops are 79-81's.

Compared to my 79 280 vs the engine they put in it, it was real weak!! Ok guys, check this link out. I talked to the guy today and he said it wasn't running...it was the other day but the battery is now dead and the tank is almost empty. He said I could come by and try to get it running again. My question for you experts is....for a car that has been sitting for 14 years wouldn't all the rubber be dry rotted especially the rear and front main seals or is this to good a bargain to pass up. Someone give me some input (or ****** it out from under me if it is a good deal) lol. Some one let me know something please. Here is the link.

An automatic w/154k miles and it's sat for the last 15 years... He'd be lucky if I gave him $500 for it.

It doesn't run, it's probably got 14 year old gas (which, by the way, isn't gas anymore, it's called varnish!), he wants you to get it running for him AND he wants to charge you $1250 for the privilege?!

Also, if the tank is that low, it's probably completely rusted out too, so it'll need reconditioned at a minimum and likely an entirely new gas tank.

Ok, check out this description and let me know what you all think.

1982 280ZX Turbo Automatic 4 speed, everything is OEM except transmission & stereo. Interior is all there and in ‘like new’ condition. Also comes with bra, rear louvers, all trophies and awards. This is a multi national & local award winner!! It won 1st place, twice. It’s a stunning car. Spent months rebuilding this beauty. Only reason this car is being sold is for medical reasons. Someone’s going to get a sleek looking ride with excellent gas mileage all for only $4,800 or OBO. Call & leave me a message and I’ll get back with you….xxx-xxx-xxxx.

If it is everything it says, is that a good price? and how hard would it be to convert to a 5 speed or would you recommend it?

$4800 for a restored to bone stock 280zxt? And they did all that work for a tranny upgrade and still kept it auto?! Yikes.... you could buy a nice 240Z for that much, AND swap in a turbo motor.

Well I'm glad you two guys are here. So...you are saying this is a crappy deal and neither one of you would go for it???? How much should I offer since your saying this is to much??? Don't leave me hanging with just statements about coulda shoulda woulda.... lol!! I'm buying a 280zx within the next two weeks because I have to have a daily driver and I don't want a car payment and I want the only car I ever loved!!! So sell me yours or give me good advice!! Please note I said "ZX" I don't hate the 240's or 260's, I just loved my 280zx!

It's because the '83/'84 4-speed automatic from a Maxima is a straight swap. They were still using fuel injected L24's in the Maxima so it is a very easy swap with no pedal changes or master/slave cylinders to install and bleed.

Still, it would have to be in crazy good shape for me to go for that. I bought a running 280ZX 2+2 Turbo w/auto and 164k on the odometer and it passed smog for $500.
