I replaced that black box on my turbo Z today. Now "The Voice" aka, talking lady works quite well.

I took the old one apart. It had quite a bit of water damage. Lots of rust and corrosion.

The white disc is the record.... got 1 turntable and a micro-tire.

a small electric motor spins a rubber band that spins the disc. High tech!

Water damage? Quite a hard place to get water up to... Is your spare tire well rusted out?

Probably from a leaky hatch seal.

not too bad actually. The spare tire is in place. The bottom area has lots of surface rust, no plug, but no rot through.
The tire may have been removed at one point and then put back though.... still hard to get water up there.

voice lady

my talking lady stopped working once. My problem was that the parking/running lights would not work half of the time. so when the park/run lights didnt work, neither did the voice lady. it was my headlight switch and it fixed the problem with mine.

Haha! I'm so glad my Z doesn't have that. I had a Maxima that had the talking lady, and it drove me insane! I was always contemplating ripping the thing out. If it had one, I'd definitely remove it, or at least put a switch on it to turn it off.

It only says something when you're doing something wrong! why would it be talking all the time?
Its saved me a few times from leaving my lights on and its not loud.

If I pull one of these out of an 83, will it work in my 81?

It was only an option in the 82-83 model. So your 81 is not wired for it. Technically you could probably get it all wired up, but the 10's or 100's of hours spent doing so would not be worth it.

You need the box & wiring harness. Then run all the wires to each of the sensors (lights, e-brake, fuel, speed, doors) then run the power, and to the speakers. I split apart the wiring harness for the box one time & labeled most of the wires. By the time I got done dividing & labeling them, I knew it was not worth my time to try to manually hook one up.

And... most people hate the box & remove it anyway.

If you are dying to hear the lady "bitch" at you when you leave a door open, lights on, or run out of fuel, buy an 82-83 zx.

Left door is open
Right door is open
Park brake is set
Fuel is low
Lights are on

That's all she says.

Alot of people think she says AJAR instead of OPEN, but nope, it''s OPEN.

Repeats all but fuel is low every few seconds until the condition is corrected. Fuel is low is repeated about every 3 minutes.

In case you haven't fixed yours yet, here's a sound clip I made. Now you'll know why it's cool for about 3 seconds.
