Turbonator
Turbonator
Have any of you guys heard of www.turbonator.com. Their product, the turbonator, claims to add up to 35 horsepower. It functions like the Tornado but is electronically powered and spins faster. Has anybody actually bought this before and does it work as good as they say it does? I'm planning to get one for the 280zx I'm going to get in 2 weeks.
We've discussed this, and the general consensus is it doesn't really do much of anything. Here's the post we discussed this in:

Now hold on a fricking minute here.
Has anyone ACTUALLY tried this product? Can anyone here PERSONALLY verify that it's a crock of ish?
If not then why all the harsh judgement on this product? It's got a 30day no questions asked money back guarantee. If you're interested in it then why not give it a try and if you don't like it then return it. It probably take like 10 minutes to install so that's not really an issue here. Once you have the car and you still want to give it a try go for it and let us know how it turned out. What have you got to lose but a little bit of time away from your money if you don't like it? And in the post referenced above it was NEVER stated that this thing wouldn't work. Someone said that since it's after the air filter it wouldn't work (which isn't true based on the priciple of the product) and then the rest of the thread went into fuel atomization and velocity theories. Alls I'm saying is it's not wise to take advice on something from someone who's opinion is based on heresay. Give it a try. I've tried the Tornado before (on a Geo Prizm) and it really does work. I got better gas mileage (not much) and noticeably better throttle response (though I couldn't neccesarily tell if I picked up any HP). I don't know how much those things go for because mine came inside of an intake pipe I bought for the car at a junk yard.
This wasn't an attack on anyone who gave an opinion here and I wasn't pointing fingers at anybody. I'm just giving my advice to the original question.

even if it does work (probably not) its WAY overpriced. theres maybe a buck worth of material there, and last i checked, stamping sheet metal was cheap as hell. seeing as they are so cheap to make, wouldnt it make sense for the auto manufacturers to just incorporate this into the design? they could advertise higher horsepower numbers and better gas mileage for a few paltry cents per car. not one auto maker has put this "miracle device" to use on their cars, which in my eyes robs all credibility from it.

I'm getting a 1981 280zx non-turbo(dammit) 2 seater. Rust decimated the fenders and there are miscellaneous spots of surface rust. I have to buy new tires and a passenger side window. The interior is in fair condition and the engine only has 154k miles. It drives smooth, shifts smooth and is a damn quick little car.
Popular Mechanic had a review of ALL of these things a couple months ago (jul-aug-sep issue??) they voted EVERY one of these to be junk.. they even had a notice on two or three of them that they would actually cause damage to your car!
