I took my T5 to a reputable transmission shop, since I have no idea how to rebuild a transmission, and they quoted me over $1,300 to have it fixed

Sound about right?

I remember it whining, but only slightly, anyone have any ideas? Or a spare T5 for sale?

 

If it was me:

Cheap - 240SX 5sp swap. Basically use the front bell housing from an L series NA mod for the bearing and you're good to go.

Best - Z32 300ZX tranny. Make your own adapters or buy the kit

 

$1300 is ridiculous for a standard T5 rebuild thats out of the car. The late 71c's in the s14's are a good trans. I'm on the fence about the z32 trans, it's a good trans but if adapter plates have to be custom made I would stick my money on a t56.

 

Found one local, $500 with 63k on it, comes with B&M short shifter

 

If all it was doing was "whining", why not throw it in until it asplodes (or gets too loud)? It should take about 1.5hrs to swap transmissions.

 

Try changing your trans fluid more then once every 5 years.
