Gives us some background on your car so we can help you better. Has it been siting for a while, has it had any recent work done to it, is it an Auto or Manual tranny?

Feel free to type more than one liners to explain the problem. More info = more help.

Does the clutch engage? Does the shifter feel stiff or hard to get between gears? Has this always been happening? If not, when did it start?

Sorry dude, there's not a lot we can give you without a lot more info.

Is it grinding?

I'm not sure what this means:

sounds like the either the clutch is slippin, or your brakes are in need of adjusting.

put the rear in the air, then check the wheels, but make sure its in neutral first.

Yeah, it sounds like the brakes might be dragging. If you normally keep the e-brake engaged when the car is parked (especially if it sits in that position for long periods of time), the brakes will usually stick until you drive it some. Try tapping the brakes several times while rolling backward and stop leaving the car parked with the e-brake on (put the tranny in 2nd gear while parked). Let us know if that helps with the problem.

so your left rear brake caliper was sticking due to a parking brake cable that would not properly retract? good to know.
that happened to me as well

Now you don't have to sell it!
