Its probably a Z32 LSD. those are far more common than the Z31 LSD.

KTM200-280zxt 06-27-2006 04:36 PM

would you like to tell me how that is unlucky?

81 Black L28E 06-27-2006 08:07 PM

Not for long ..................Hahaha....
Clutch witch one should i get ? ....
Drive line will i need to swap them ?....

Bleach 06-27-2006 09:17 PM

Driveline: I dunno... I'm just a noob

Clutch: I always say just to use a stock clutch or a stock 'turbo' clutch if you want more grab. You have to get a 2+2 or turbo 240mm flywheel but those grab good and are just as cheap

lww 06-27-2006 09:25 PM

Yes, you'll need a drive shaft from a Nissan 5-speed.

81 Black L28E 06-27-2006 10:21 PM

ok i will pull that drive line in the morning :( .....
now that clutch? iam using the 79 stock flywheel and 5 speed trany so i should get the 79 stock clutch ??????...
mabe this week sometime i dont know i still need a little cash .......
dam it on that drive inline. i hate getting under that brown piece of shit !!!!!

lww 06-27-2006 11:00 PM

Don't sweat it. With the tranny already out, it's only the bolts on the diff that need to come out.

WildmaN 06-28-2006 03:34 AM

Yes and there are only 4 bolts and nuts holding the driveline to the rear end. You have 4 bolts with a flat space towards the middle. (assuming the drivelines are the same bolted on the rear end) So they don't turn, when you loosen the nuts on the backside of the driveshaft. The nuts are 12 mm, and you put it where you have access for using a hand wrench. And as you take the nuts off, turn the shaft, so you can get to the other ones. Just be careful, you don't drop the nuts, I did, and they were a pain to find. Otherwise, after that, it drops right out of the rear end, and under the car. And then to install the 5 speed one, just do it the opposite way, and bolt it back together, and you are golden brother. Pretty soon, here, I am taking the driveshaft out of my '81. It is so friggin' simple, except for the fact of catching my gear oil out of my tranny.

As for the '79 clutch, yeah it should work fine, just make sure it is still good. Like the disc, throwout bearing and such. If you have any doubts replace the parts you feel, need it. So you don't do more work than you need to. As for my clutch setup. I have the Centerforce clutch plate, and Duralast disc, and throwout bearing. And it shifts without any slip, pretty sweet.

lww 06-28-2006 07:30 AM

It's definately worth replacing the wear parts on the clutch while it's out of the car and accessible.

It would suck to put it all together just to find out you need to pull it apart again to replace something...

81 Black L28E 06-28-2006 08:45 AM

yes for sure a new clutch disk is needed .throw out bearing looks in good shape ...clutch presser plate looks ok ...i have found a few kits that sell it all for just about a $100 bucks ...iam going to check the auto part store befor i order it mabe he will hook me a little cheaper ..he has in the past .....
my flywheel has a little rust on the out side ...iam just going to clean it up with some lite grit sand paper ...my friend did this to his 240sx flywheeel and he said it worked great ...well time to get my day started ..i will post up later and let you all know how its going ................as always thanks for the help guys ....:033:

Bleach 06-28-2006 08:50 AM

My throwout bearing is maybe 1 year old but I'm replacing it when I pull my tranny for the turbo swap. Always replace the $15 bearing... that's legendary advice.

soooo... did you end up finding an LSD?

81 Black L28E 06-28-2006 10:26 AM

no lsd yet ..we are thinking about welding up the diff from this 79 brown piece of shit ..

lww 06-28-2006 10:56 AM

If you weld it, you'll hate it going around slow corners and fast corners will turn into even faster spin outs... ;)

Bleach 06-28-2006 11:27 AM

There used to be a 1988 300ZX turbo on craigslist in Seattle... had some problems but $1500 for the whole car! Some people pay half that just for the LSD. I liked the car though... all black

KTM200-280zxt 06-28-2006 01:33 PM

I wouldnt suggest welding the diff... I drove a Jeep Comanche with a welded diff and boy was that fun. Youll look real cool taking slow turns with your tires chirping, its actually kind of funny

You can break stuff too... A local auto-crosser had a nuts 240Z w/ welded diff... one day he cranked it too hard & the rear end came right out from under the car. :crybaby: Lots of people say a welded diff is only good for straight line drag racing... you'll hate it when driving normal.

81 Black L28E 06-28-2006 08:14 PM

well I BBQed IT UP today instead of removing that drive line ...
owell there is always another day .....IT WAS JUST TO HOT ....
i did take some time to clean up that flywheel ..it had a little rust and needed a good cleaning ..
..i cant wait to feel the shift .it will be funner than the auto for sure ...
but iam sure i will miss the auto when i just want to cruze around eating a cheese burger ...lololololol

Dam that rear end blew the F@#! up ..lololol ya welding that extra one is just a thought ..i would keep the stock one just in case something went wrong .. i would likE to feel it all locked up it would be chill ...
super kick king . doughnut master
