storage lien

Hey! Does anyone know anything about getting a storage lien on a car with no title? I was talking to this guy about how I don't have the title for my car and that I am going to owe a lot for back registration on it and he told me to get a storage lien. So I was just wondering if anyone knew how this worked.... Oh and I might get a new 280 soon....

If you can stand the 12hr campout at the DMV , they'll be able to tell you everything you need to know. I don't know how it works without a title. I know if you had one, you could just non-op it in CA. I hate the DMV. Can you get a hold of the person that sold you the car? If so, you can have them fill out a bill of sale and transfer of ownership and that should be enough to have it non-opped, or registered if you wanted to. Back fees add up quick in CA. I moved to South Dakota and had my car a year before I registered it and it still only came to a little over $80, and I only had to 5min to be helped.

well I have a bill of sale for my car but I'm supposed to be getting a new 280z/zx I'm not sure which one but it was stolen and recovered. Then the owner got it back and put it out back on his property and left it to the landlord... no keys, no title, no interior. The guy that has it just said get a storage lien but I just wnated to know how this whole thing works..
Thanks

Oh, I think I know what he's talking about. In Ca they have a law(well actually it's more of a rule), but anyways here it goes:

If you claim a peice of property, and nobody else does so over a certain amount of time, it's yours! If you park the car on your property, and then file a report with the police department about it being abandoned. They'll leave it open to be claimed. If someone tries to claim it, they have to provide proof of ownership. I'm not sure how long it is, but my brother got a truck this way. Someone parked an old Toyota pickup on his property(he's got a few acres of dirt). It sat there for the longest time. Finally he went to the police station and told them about it. They said they could tow it and if nobody claimed it, he could have it because he found it. He told them they could just leave it on his land while it was waiting to be claimed, that way he wouldn't have to pay for the storage lien from being towed. The sheriff put a notice on the car with a notice saying the car would be removed and destroyed if it wasn't claimed by the date on the notice. As soon as it expired my brother went to the police station and did whatever it was he had to do. He had that truck for a while, but it ended up getting repossesed because he owed a lot of back taxes. I'm not sure if that's a state law, or a county law, federal? It was done through the county sheriff in Riverside Co, California several years ago. It works the same way for if you find money or personal property that someone lost. If you take it to the police, they'll hold it and if nobody claims it, it's yours for finding it.

Oh, and have the vin run first to make sure it wasn't stolen or anything before you park it on your property. I don't know if the police would be too keen on you showing up saying a stolen car is parked in your driveway and you want to keep it

Ok, I talked to my bro, cause his buddy does repossesions and here's the deal on a storage lien. It works the same as if your car is towed. You say the car is being stored on your property. As a result of this, you can get a storage lien saying if the car isn't removed within a specified period of time(not sure how long, didn't ask), they relinquish possesion of the car to you, the storer. So once the conditions of the lien turns the car over to you, it's free and clear. You can get a title(not neccesarily a clean one), and shouldn't have to pay any back fee's as long as you get it registered as soon as the lien expires. Now this information comes from what my bro considers a reliable source, but it's not from a legal source so you might want to head down to the courthouse and find out what it take to put a storage lien on a car. I'm pretty sure it's gotta be on your property though.

Thanks J!

I have a bike I bought back in 2000 and neglected to transfer or register it. Now the CA DMV wants a LOT of money in fees.

I'll just storage lien it! HAHAHA!! Well, we'll see how it goes...
