Speedometer Broken (inside tranny)
Hey all,
My speedo cable is hooked into the transmission properly but doesn't want to turn when I drive. I can turn the cable by hand while it is still connected to the tranny.
If whatever drives the speedo in the transmission has gone out how much $$ am I looking at for replacement parts?
I just bought a new cable for it so I know the cable is still in one piece.
Thanks.

#1... How do you know it's not the speedo that doesn't work?
#2... You can take the speedo cog out of the tranny & inspect it. Remove the cable from where it mounts to the tranny... you will see a 10mm bolt holding the cog in place... remove it... pull out cog. They are prolly super cheap from a junk yard (if not free). Just pay attention to the year of the car the tranny came from, & the color of the cog gear.

#1: The cable doesn't spin on the speedo end when the car is driving. (I pulled it out from the back of the speedo and watched it)
#2: I'm pulling the cog out now -- The local junkyards don't have any 280zx trannys though
Thanks for the info.

Just pulled it and the gear looks kinda stripped. Is this probably due to old age or to something else in the tranny?
Update: I stuck my finger in the speedo hole in the tranny and I could feel a gear on a rod that could easily be moved to both ends. There seemed to be a washer on the rod to the rear of the gear. Why would a washer be moving up and down this rod? I might be wrong but it did feel like a washer.
