Smog question

Ok, here's my question. I have a 79 (green) that does not require the cat. The new 79 (yellow) that I bought does require the cat. I'm swapping the engine out of the yellow one that does req a cat to the green one that does not req the cat. Do I need to have the cat green one now that I swapped it out of the yellow one??

ok any one confused about that post?

If train A is going 80 mph east and leaves at 2pm, and train b leaves at 3 but is going 45mph south west . . . .

Haha . . . sorry. I had to. If they are both 79's why dont they both require cats? is it a legal thing or one just didnt have one? If the law for the green is no cats you wouldnt have to transfer it over just cuz you;re putting a different motor in. Then again if your local or state controlled smog ****'s find out thats a different story

Okay let me see if I can make sense of this. You have 2 '79 280zx's. Okay one requires a cat, and the other doesn't. You are taking the motor out of the one requiring the cat, and putting into the one that doesn't. Okay is that is what you are asking. This is what I would determine. As long as the motor is out of the same type of model, and or make. It shouldn't matter, because they go by the vin# for emission requirements. Not the engine, unless it is so alien, that it is a totally different make of engine. Anyway I don't see a problem, with what you are asking.

That is what I kind of figured was the case. And no problem, helping you with the wording. Sometimes, I can write something, that doesn't make much sense to anybody else. But no big deal, hope it helps you out, and good luck.

Yeah it is nice in the winter and such. But I don't care how long you have been here. And I have lived here since '88. You NEVER get used to this friggin' heat. I go outside for a short while, and come back in soak and wet with sweat. And drinking water like it is going out of style. Anyway I do like the neighborhood I live in. The neighbors pretty much keep to themselves, and never complained about my projects over here. But then I am not in any HOA **** developement. That is how I feel about them anyway. But enough of that, back on topic.

If the car originaly not equipped with a cat gets the other engine then no you do not have to put the cat on it. The vin statement is correct. But if you want to be cool with the tree huggers there are always high flo cats. But if it came with a cat then it must have a cat and so on.

This is the difference between what are called 'Federal' cars vs. 'California' cars.

California was at the 'cutting edge' of emission controls and had more restrictive emission requirements on vehicles sold in California than any other state in the US up until the 80's.

Since then, all manufacturers have sold cars in the US that meet or exceed the minimum requirements from EVERY state in the US.

Auto manufacturers used to have to keep a separate manufacturing process for all the cars they wanted to sell into California vs. the cars they sold to every other state in the US.

There was a tangible decrease in the performance of most cars sold in California vs. the rest of the US until the manufacturers figured out how to meet the emissions requirements in California and retain their performance.
