Shifter popping out!
Shifter popping out!
Hey guys, latley when im in 5th gear going at a high speed usually on the highway, my shifter pops out of gear and back into nuetral by itself. It started a month ago and has happened almost 8 times already and one time i didnt notice it go into nuetral and almost overeved my engine. I commute almost 12 miles on the highway everday so this is a very stressful problem! Help please!
^ Rather be truthfull upfront than to propegate false hope...
If it's popping out of gear while driving at a constant speed, then chances are it's toast in the very near future.

Great just what i wanted to hear, and i just got the car back after 2 weeks of restoration work. Well its not when its at a constant speed. usually when im driving hard around 85mph on the highway then as i slow down it comes out. Doesnt happen with any other gear tho. how long was it till your transmission fianlly gave out rod? I want to know how much time i have left... Oh and I have to look for a R200 not a R180 right?
If you go easy on it, you might get another 20 or 30 thousand miles out of it. 12 miles each way is almost nothing.
Change out your tranny oil with some Synthetic tranny oil from Castrol, Mobil 1, Redline or Royal Purple. This will improve the functioning of your tranny, smooth out the shifts and extend what life you have left in it.
When you change out the fluid, look for any metal shavings or fragments that come out with the old oil. How much comes out may help you figure out how much of your synchro is gone.
I'm not sure why you need a new differential though... The R180/R200 is the rear-end, not the tranny in case someone is confused.

Ok Iww, thanks for the advice. I usually take it easy but sadly i just let my manually un experienced friend drive her around the block the other day and well you guessed it grinded a few times. doh! Oh well im gonna take care of it and run the synthetic oil in the tranny now. Oh and I was told R200 by some one, whats my N/A transmission really called?
