Shifter came out while driving. Now in neutral
It's literally laying down in the car. What does this mean - shifter linkage broke or a transmission issue? It was in 4th when in happened and when it broke, it remains in neutral.

probably. you are lucky the pin is not lying in the road somewhere. you can get a c clip assortment at Harbor Freight for 4.99. other wise try the hardware drawers at Ace or comparable Hardware store.
