Rear Caliper Help?!

Guys,

I know I am not stupid, it just seems like everytime I go to work on my Z a 1 hour job turns into a whole day job...... Non the less I am doing the rotors and the pads, I've spend two hours on trying to get the rear pistons to compress so I can put them back on. WOW, what a pain I am now out of ideas, I've done plenty of brake jobs, so now I'm asking for yalls help.

Any ideas?

While I am waiting on replies I am going to go do the front's wish me luck!

Thanks,
wgc_3

The front pistons squeeze in. (C-clamp) The rear pistons turn in. Use a large flathead screwdriver and stick it between the pedals on the "flower" shape on the piston. Screw it in. Or get some slip joint pliers around the edge (careful not to rip the rubber boot) and turn it in.

What year Z do you have? I know the ones I described are the 1982-83 type. Not sure on the older rear calipers

The 79-81 rears also turn in. Just tap em w/ a flathead or carefully grab the sides w/ vice grips.

PS... the Haynes Manual describes in detail how to work on the brakes.

So it took me 45 minutes to lift the car, take off the tires, regrease the bairings and put it all back together with the tires on, and off the jack for the fronts. Wow, now why can't I get the back pistons to compress?!?!

It's an 83, btw.

YOU DON'T COMPRESS THE REARS.... YOU TWIST THE PISTONS BACK IN.

Oh... and if you compress the rear pistons w/ a clamp, you'll probably damage the internal threaded rod & then will need a new caliper.

And thus we see that we should READ THE MANUAL before doing technical work.

You turn the rear calipers clockwise, with a screwdriver. And if you have to tap gently with a hammer. And then it should turn back in. And use the screwdriver on the indentations, on the piston. And yeah be careful, and it should be allright. I found the front brakes to be more of a pain, than the rear. Probably because I didn't have a c-clamp to use, for the front ones. I ended up releasing the bleeder screw, so I could put the front pads on. And then I had to rebleed the master, and the 2 wheels. What a pain that was, next time, I will get a c-clamp. To make it easier, all in all it took me 7 hours to do the brakes, and change 3 wheel studs.

I Had That Problem As Weell And Ended Up Having To Get New Calipers. The Previous Owner Did Not Believe In Brake Pads. Now They Are Great.

I had a sticky caliper on my 82, so I disassembled it and cleaned it out. I didn't damage any seals so I put it back together with the old ones, so far so good. If you unscrew the piston out completely you can remove the boot and clean out the inside with new brake fluid. I didn't even mess with the inner piston since I didn't have snap ring pliers. Lots of junk inside- rusty chunks too- but now she's clean and operates smooth!
