Racing Seats

Hey guys, i just bought some racing seats off a guy for my 280zx. The thing is there are no brackets for them. They are a Matrix brand racing seat and i was wondering if any brackets made for the 280zx of any brand would work.

i just went through a similar problem with my 240sx, for the most part probably not. you might be able to buy universal brackets and make them work. but i dont think any company makes a bracket for those seats and your car. you may be able to get lucky and get brackets for another seat and maybye it will match to your seat but who knows and its not worth it to find out if your wrong. this is what i did, got universal sliders, made aluminum brackets(just bought a piece of aluminum cut small rectangles bent where needed drilled holes, weld to sliders, painted and installed). you might be able to use your stock stuff too, ive seen that before. over all its usaully a pain in the butt.

Ok, here goes another rant... Don't mess with cheap fabricated mounts ESPECIALLY made of ALUMINUM!!

What do you think holds that seat to the car in an accident? The mount! If it's made of ANYTHING shy of hardened steel and grade 10 bolts, it'll sheer right off in an accident and cause great bodily harm and/or DEATH!

If you've ever tried to drill through a REAL seat bracket, you'll find it's harder then the gates of hell themselves!

There's a reason. You need the seat mount to hold you in when the car is being subjected to the incredible forces associated with a car accident.

That's why seat adapters cost so much, because of the type of steel used and the way they're manufactured.

My recommendation would be to buy a pair of 280ZX seat adapters from Corbeau or one of the other makers, pay the $80/ea and then drill them to mount your seats.

Make sure you test fit everything before you start drilling or you'll find out like so many have that most 'modern' sport seats on the market are a bit too wide for our cars and you'll be drilling more holes. You can make them fit, but you'll have to spend some money and some time to make it right.

Good luck.

i used the stock rails for my aluminum road race seat, then used a piece of 2x3 cut and re-welded of one side for the incline.

This is starting to be a pain in my butt man. I dont think i want to spend more money to try to get these over sized seats for my car. WHat do you guys think? Get it custom fit or just get my old Z seats reupholstered? Im thinking of all black leather. Anyone ever do that? I was wondering the price range for it.

dammit good point im going out to the garage and removing the aluminum, grinding off the brackets from the stock sliders and welding them to the universal sliders. ill be back in a few hours to let you know what happens.
yeah listen to him and dont use aluminum, i did it not thinking of any consequences, just looking for the quick fix. and to the thread starter dont get discouraged yet, take some measurements and see what your options are. check how far it is from the slider holes to the holes in the floor then see what kind of angle you need to get it to work. from there check your stock seat brackets and see if you could make them work. you could always find a garage in your area that has someone who can do some decent welding and have them make it for you. im sure it wouldnt be any more than say 150 at most for that, but im thinking alot less than that.

It's most likely going to cost you more to get them recovered/rebuilt than to get brackets made or modify a seat adapter, especially if you do it in leather.

You'll save some money doing it in synthetic leather, but it'll still cost some serious change depending on what their hourly rate is.

I still think the best/cheapest option is to modify an adapter bracket made for the 280ZX to fit your new seats.

well if your going to get rid of the seats, how much. of course i would rather see you install them in your ride. heck i even installed z31 leather 8 way power adjust seats in a 280zx for one of my customers. they are really wide, but they still fit. not my cup of tea, but its what the customer wanted. they sat a little high for me, but im 6 foot and he's like 5'5"
