Wha? all the "qwest tv ads" say you can download "up to" 1.5MB/sec... up to meaning "rarely?"

I dunno what 1.5mb per second means. I had cable and they say 5mb per second. well, when downloading a file you know you can never download at 5megs a second... maybe one half meg a second at most. What's up with that?

ya, I'm on dialup right now. Will be getting cable internet soon.

well most here should be considered lucky. I live to far out of town to get dsl or cable. only sat net, or dial up. and sat net is out of the question. And these phone lines are old. i am lucky to get 21.0k/sec with a self powerd ext business modem that i paid $200 for. but it does better then my old one

Ahhh, advertising's little tricks. You see... when they say you can download at 5 megs a second, it's true. But, they're talking about megaBITS not megaBYTES... big difference.

well it is dling at 5mb/s which is 5megabits. You're thinking of 5 megabytes which would be 5MB/s. I don't know why they advertise it like that, but I remember there was a good reason and ya. Dsl sucks, I have it and hate it

bit
byte=8 bits

It really depends on who your provider is. If you get a good one (like mine) you get what you pay for. If you get a crappy one, or go the cheapest route possible, you'll get poor quality of service. That service includes your service speed as well as your curstomer service quality.

I'm about 800 feet from the local CO and I have a 6mb DSL service and I regularly get 550kbps downloads or half a MegaByte / second.

The difference in technology between Cable and DSL in addition to how 'crowded' your service is will be the primary reason why you see significant variations in speed from one service to the next and one neighborhood to the next.

In one neighborhood, Cable may be faster than DSL, but in another neighborhood, DSL may be faster than Cable. I ran both for about 4 years. PacBell DSL was so un-reliable, I had the cable for backup. Once the DSL service became reliable enough that I hadn't had to fail-over to the cable in about a year, I finally canceled it and went to DirecTV.
