If you have a spare parts car... 5speed tranny swap it. Done and done. It's not hard if you have all the parts right in front of you.

uhh, i live in south GA and i need a parts car...you killed the transmissin and theres no need in swapping in another auto so unless you can find and or willing to put in a 5speed give it up.... i really want another 2+2

sorry for your loss...but you can swap the motor into your other z

oh you have a 5speed parts car, makes it easier

Well Caleb, I hope that wasn't your daily driver. The swap can be done in a weekend if you have all of the parts. There are plenty of sources for information on the web. All you need to do is find them and pick out what is relevant to YOUR situation. There are plenty of people on here that will help you too. They may laugh their asses off while doing it, but you gotta admit you do deserve the ridicule. It all fades with time.

P.S. Air Tools!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, how high did you have the rpm's when you did this neutral drop?? Either way, yeah the auto tranny sucks. I had one in one of my '82 280zx's. It got me around but a 5 speed is so much nicer. Now what did we learn from this? That's right, when you have a car loaded down with your friends it is not a good idea to try and show off with a weak transmission...use a turbo 5-speed for that

Even the turbo 5 speed is going to have issues there. Most transmissions for "street driven" cars are designed for "normal" use. Neutral drop doesn't fall into the category of "normal" use. High rpm clutch dump will have the same effect on a manual tranny and the Borg Warner 5-speed that came in the '82 to '83 manual turbo cars is only "slightly or barely" stronger than the factory 5-speed.

If you do the tranny swap, take pictures, document everything you do and you might win a prize and be able to contribute your own How-To "sticky" to the forum.

FSM or Haynes is your best bet. Chilton's isn't very good unless you're able to interpret their vague instructions. Anyway, I wrote a semi-complete how-to to my friend when I swapped out the a/t to a BW 5 speed on my zxt. I'm sure it's basically the same. Let me see if I still have the email saved.

It's pretty straight forward.

-Swap the flexplate / flywheel & clutch
-Swap the transmissions
-Swap the drivelines
-Swap the pedal assembly
-Install the clutch master, line, slave

The only thing you have to deal with is the auto inhibitor switch (won't let the car start in gear). Fubar ran into that prob, but I don't remember how he fixed it... he made a thread on the swap too.

It is a very easy swap. Just get someone to help you remember what you took off (in what order) on the manual car. Then reverse that process on the auto car. Everything is real straight forward

what each and every ne of the boyz sed----plus this---the automatic tranny from datsun sukked----now you have the golden opportunity to replace thesukky tranny with a decent 5 speed----use the fsm and haynes and complete a car for yourself that will be good and reliable to 300k miles---and have fun.....and--- DO NOT DO THAT STOOPIT THING AGAIN......

That sucks man...but that will teach you to beat up on a transmission. And yes the autos do suck in Jap cars anyway. Now my auto transmission in my Firebird..is freaking sweet. But she is a muscle car. And to me...muscle cars..not sportscars should have auto transmissions. Oh and I am glad all 4 of my Z's have the 5 speeds. Anyway good luck with the swap man. We are pulling for you.
