Question oil passage for turbo

1 has any one??????? or should I say why wasen't the oil passage for the turbo routed from the oil cooler instead of the oil sending unit (from oil gallery in cylinder block) seems like the oil is hotter here..... just a thought.........

2 do I need the auxiliary cooling fan on my 83 turbo?? I guess it was removed so the strut bar could be installed....... thanks

1) cooling the engine oil is cooling the engine oil. doesnt matter where its getting cooled from cuase its a cumulative tempurature.

2) that injector fan is a worthless hunk of **** that should have never been there in the first place.

actually on earlier z's in a hotter and drier climate a carb'd z would run for no more then 10 minutes before vapor lock stalls it.

so are you saying, that the oil temp is the same coming from the oil cooler, as is the sending units sorce.............than whats the point of the oil cooler??

actually if i read it correctly, the oil flows from the oil filter block which first sends the oil through the cooler, then filters it and sends it into the oil pan, now i have no clue why nissan just tossed the oil temp sender in the side of the oil pan, but it should give you a general refference whay your oil temp is at.

the oil pressure switch, is comming out of the cylinder block not the oil pan. I'am just saying would'ent it be better to tap some of the cooler oil, for the turbo before it went back into the engine.........from what I've read that the turbos biggest enemy is exessive heat ........I will be needing new oil cooler lines in the future they are sweating, so I thought it would be a good time to incorperate a fitting, if this was a good idea........it might not have any merit to it... just seeing if any of ya'll have put any thought in this before.........

To cool the oil. What's the point of a coolant radiator? To transfer heat out of the coolant.

You were talking about oil temp... that's why Hoov was referring to the oil temp sensor.

The oil is circulated through the system taking the heat & transferring it to the oil cooler. It's not like the oil is standing still.

what i meant is its a cumulative tempurature. as in once the small stream passes through the turbo it goes right into the 4QT's in the pan and drops in temp then through the oil cooler and drops in temp again and then goes back through everything. basically my point was, where the oil cooler is placed in the system doesnt matter. you just read my post really poorly.

and you guys miss my point as you said..( the oil leaves the turbo to the oil pan, and drops temp then through the oil cooler and drops in temp again....) thats when I talking about tapping the oil source for the turbo, after the the oil cooler and before motor. thats the coolest oil agreed.... with that said thats got to be better on the turbo bearing............. my thoughts hermultra

Do as you will.... go ahead and redesign it if you feel like you are a better engineer than Nissan.

I don't think Nissan was looking for "cheap" when they built the 280zxt... well, other than cheap corrosion protection.

I agree w/ that. There are lots of things to upgrade on the 280zxt... this isn't a big priority.

Two reasons they likely took the oil from the oil sending unit rather than after the oil cooler:

1. Pressure is higher at the pressure sending unit than after the oil cooler.

2. If the oil cooler becomes clogged/blocked, this would starve the turbo of oil.

I think he just wants cooler oil (from the oil cooler) going to the turbo.

That being said, the slightly cooler oil from the cooler as opposed to directly from the engine block is not going to make that much of a difference to the turbo bearing. What will hurt the bearing is shutting off your engine when the turbo is still hot and no oil is flowing to remove the heat.

thanks what you say makes more sence.......... I was thinking about the pressure thing in the back of my mind.......... also I did not know that the 5 speeds did not come with oil coolers...

my car used to have an a/t trans, but now it has 5 speed so I guess I"am ahead of the game in that respect.........hermultra
