Yeah, if your Z is your only means of travel...then it can get irritating at times. I know...my Z is a daily driver. Have patience. I've never heard of a water pump gasket giving out, unless it was installed careless.

Water pumps a cake job. I did it on the side of the highway in about 20 minutes. But a gasket just blowing out like that is strange (a water pump gasket anyways). Are you sure the shaft didnt go out and that's what spilled the coolant. It may seem like the gasket but it sounds more like you lost your pump. The gasket would probably just be a slow leak. Grab the fan and try wiggling it back and forth and up and down. If you've got substantial movement then it's your pump man.

Oh and therm, don't remove the radiator for weight reduction

Hey Thermal look at it this way. Think of how much money you saved. And will continue to save in the near future. You would probably have spent about $100 at a shop. For just changing that simple thing. I mean I saved myself about close to $300, fixing my rpm problem, when my top radiator hose blew. And it sucked into the air system, which in turn gummed up my throttle body. It took me like 13 hrs to find the problem, and fix it. Anyway the frustration goes away, after you take your Z down the road. After busting you butt, to fix it. As soon as you take it out, everything just goes out the window. That is what I have experienced with my Z. Okay I am done rambling, sorry guys.

WildmaN I know exactly what you mean. On my previous 300zx before it died, a friend and I started with no experience, went in there, fixed the waterpump, radiator, timing belt, and thermostat. We found out why the car was dropping revs and cleaned the MAF, we fixed the low-idle problem etc. I mean knowing I spent about $200 when I could have spent probably $800+ for a shop to do that was a nice feeling. Then once you drove the Z down the street and now it felt better than before, it was one of the greatest feelings ever. Nothing beats knowing you fixed the problem yourself, made the car better, and saved money all at the same time. That's just a deal you can't beat.

Ya' know, without going into parts, cost, etc.. I'm tellin' ya now that I have at least $4000 into my '82, and probably wouldn't get $1500 out of it. That's just the way it is. Period!

I wish it was better, but it ain't....

Carls Z

PS... I love my car, though.....

One day I will know what it is like to drive a Z. I have put butt loads of work into my Z. And have never drove one. Well. If you count the time I had to strear one while being towed.

Wow that sucks fubar. And congratulations Therm. Hey 3 hours aint bad condidering you pulled the radiator, PS and the AC in that time while changing your gasket. Not to mention you weren't getting payed for it (that tends to make people work faster )And think about it this way, the more stuff you've got to do to your car the better you'll know your way around it.

geting paid makes you work faster? damn I wish you would tell that to the ppl who work at the local shops here. Down here, if you get paid, you work much much slower.

Must not be working flag time then. If I take two hours to do a one hour job, I still only get payed for one hour. If I do that same job in 20min. I still get payed for an hour. That's enough to keep me from dragging ***. What other field can you put in 40 hrs and get payed for 60?
