I wonder why the T5 you found has no bell? Maybe the tranny is blown so they sold the bell to someone else? those can only be used for L-series engines.

You'll need the T5 type driveshaft and the differential flange from a turbo car. The rear transmission crossmember is the same. Remove yours, turn it around (180 deg) and re-install. It lines up perfect with the rear mount. I put a T5 in my non-turbo 280ZX and it was easy.

...then later on I put a turbo engine in... but I ran the T5 for a while behind the NA L28

I have a 2-seater T5 driveshaft for sale. No diff flange though... accidently left it on a rear diff that I sold! OOPS!

Some people cut the bellhousing and weld it to a mounting plate on a WC T5. I've only seen it done a couple times, but that may be why it's missing the bellhousing.

what you could also hope for is a complete T5 that is broken. then buy it cheap and use it for just the bellhousing.

I have a whole turbo parts car for sale with a T5, but its pretty far from you

It's not the process we are debating Z Hag, it's the inability to find affordable parts to complete the task (or in some cases, just finding parts period).

Ok, I think I found a site that will help me find the T-5. (www.car-parts.com)

Now, I think I'm doing this wrong or taking this in the wrong direction...hear me out.

My newly rebuilt non-turbo engine (Stage 2 Cam from MSA, with a head job (springs, lash pads, etc for this cam), .40 oversized pistons, etc, etc. I wanted to go with a manual transmission, so I decided to swap the AT for the MT.

The MT from my '82 ZX (parts car) is just a regular 5-speed MT; the more I think about these used T-5s the more I think I'm better off by rebuilding my '82 MT instead of buying a used T-5 that may in break in 6 months. I found a reputable shop that may be able to work on this trany (yes, I rather pay professionals than do a poor job as I learn my way around it)

Now, will this T-5 make such a big difference compared to the regular MT with my new engine? I'm just a bit skeptical about spending $500 for a used T-5 (and the parts from the Turbo I need) when I can use half of that to rebuild my MT (of course, I'm hoping this shop can find parts and work this trany).

What do you guys think?

Well, I'm doing a swap, so I need other parts besides the tranny.

Any other suggestions?

All those pieces of metal were stuck on top of the drain cap (well, they were all muddy with that old transmission fluid).

Am I correct to believe that this MT is foobar? I stuck my finger in the drainage opening and I was able to pull another piece of metal, so I'm guessing it's a no-go with this MT?

What are your thoughts?
Those particles look like the ball cage from the input shaft. Yes you can buy the bearing from any bearing supply house, some of them will even remove the bearing and press on the new one. The needle bearings in the other end of the input shaft will need to be replaced also. The failure was likely caused by a bad pilot bearing, age and to many hard shifts.

You are absolutely correct about them being parts of the ball cage, however there's no way to tell which bearing they're from until you yank it apart. The entire rebuild kit is all of $150. I would go that route. Also if he does go with a T5 here's some must know info on it... (note the fluid type...)

I sold two T5's in good working condition for $250 each. I'm asking $50 for the driveshaft.

Too bad you're on the opposite end of the country from me...

Thanks guys for all your suggestions.

I think I'm just going to fix my MT and go with that.

Even if I was to find a used T-5, I still had to tune it somewhat and not to mention all the other parts that I have to get for a successful swap.

Now, anyone knows where I can get a short shifter for a non-turbo ZX? eBay has some, but those are for turbo cars, and MSA appears to have one, but the description is misleading and those guys are always a bit overpriced.

There isn't one for the N/A manual tranny. if you have access to a welder or someone with one it would be best to just cut down yours. I've thought about doing it myself just for GP, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Shortening the shifter arm's height does shorten the throw a little but its not really a short shifter

MSA's kit does raise the pivot point on the NA 5-speed so that is a true short shifter. ($80 or so?) But it only shortens the forward to back throw. The side to side movement is not affected.

T5 shifter's are very different and by raising the pivot point you shorten the throw in all directions. $129 for the basic short throw shifter for a T5

If you're gonna be slamming the gears at all on a T5, you need to make sure the short throw shifter you get has adjustable stops. This will prevent you from killing the tranny with hard shifts that overtravel the shifter.

The B&M Ripper Shifter or the Pro 5.0 shifter are the one's to get.
