I have got home a few weeks ago and started right away on my 1983 280zx turbo digital dash engine rebuild.
Hear are the things i learned so far after tearing down the motor
1 taking off valve cover
2 taking off power steering pump
3 taking off alternator
4 taking off radiator
5 radiator fan & clutch
6 taking off belt pullyes
7 taking off air conditoner mount
8 taking off exhaust intake and intake manafold
9 taking off water pump
10 taking off the 6 10mm bolts that hold on the first harmonic balancer plate
11 taking off the Head " wow what a job indeed "
this is were in at right now 1-1.16 inch socket needed to remove the rest of the harmonic balancer ? am i right ?
So far im down do the bare block as i call it any help from now would be nice to hear from everyone.
how hard is it to take off the front timing cover with the engine still inside the car ?
Any body else ever take apart the hole engine please shoot me some helpful words of adivce and " dont dues " please
Thank you , Nismo619

Welcome back bro. Hopefully things have and will continue to improve in your life.
Since you've removed the head the timing chain cover is very easy to remove. Just keep the bolts in order so you can install it w/ ease. Also... don't use a Standard socket on a Metric bolt. You should be okay w/ the huge crank bolt, but don't do it w/ normal ones. You'll create more headache than needed.

Question with Harmonic balancer pully bolt ? the closet size i have is a 1 inch 1/16 socket but i want to use the real MM socket no were in the haynes manual i could find it i have spent two days looking in the haynes manual every page word for word. Any body know the size socket i need ?
yeah
1 and 1/16 is very close to 27mm should both work.
remember when you remove this put the car in a HIGH gear like 4th or 5th, low gear isn't going to work. (this is if the transmission is still connected) Putting the tranny in gear while it sitting on the floor next to the car wont help.

Anyway, for Nismo619 to get some credibility back, he should indeed make the situation whole w/ WreckedJ30.
Ok people sorry for the delay i have been out side in the new mexico 90 + degree sun melting away at tearing down the engine on the 83 digital dash turbo car. Now every one i want u to hold onto your seats for this one . If the previous owner wanted to do a valve job on a p-90a head its not possable huh ? because of the hydralic lifters ? Now what im about to say might be krazy to every one but im pretty sure the owner before me did some type of head work , Is it possable to change the Hydralic lifters to the -p90 non hydralic lifters ? I will be tring to post pictures of this krazy clam tomorow.
now for the goodies i found out that a 6 inch to 8 inch pully works best to take off the harmonic balancer slowly. " DO not lock the three hooks onto the V belts grooves ! " HA HA too late ! minor chiping can and will happen.
All harmonic balancers are the same on all ZX models right ? 1981-1983 even turbo and non turbo right ? there was a total of 9 bolts holding the timimg cover in place " the TImimg tesnsenor black peace with a spring was " sprung out " there is only 4 bolts in the very front of the oil pan that holds the timimg cover on.
Im sun burnt to hell ,my hands hurt ,and my brain is going krazy over -p90's lol

#1... Hydraulic lifters don't have anything to do w/ the actual valve faces, so a P90A head can still receive a valve job just like any other head.
#2... Not all P90A heads are hydraulic.
#3... You do not need a pulley puller to remove the crank pulley aka "harmonic balancer." It will simply pull off w/ a few tugs... if stubborn it may need a tap w/ a mallet.
#4... Yes all 280zx crank pullies are the same, minus the 81T which had a CAS ring.
