new to the z family

hey i just purchased my first z sunday and love it. Its a 1982 280zx. Inline 6 turbo, t tops, 5 speed. I know this is probably the stupidest question but what is the 2+2 model? Mines a 2 door 2 seater is that it? Needs some interior work but the exterior is nice. I need to figure out why the gas gauge isnt working or the speedo and tach lights wont turn on. Still works but no lights so i use my gps for speed at night. And for some reason its 10MPH off. Like if im going 50 im really going 40 so i need to see whats up with that too but im totally new to these cars. I've always liked the car and my cousin had one with twin turbo set up but i really want to figure everything out so ill probably be searching and posting quite a bit and looking for some parts. Ill post some pics up a little later for yall to check it out. I got into a wreck in my subie and ended up selling it to my buddy. I did a lot of work to that and ill post that too just for fun. If you guys have any advice please shoot it my way b/c like i said im totally new to these cars lol. Thanks!

Hey Welcome looks like we have some things in common I got my Z about a week ago same car as yours from the sounds of it but mines the 83, non turbo, with the digital dash, but i just swaped it out for the analog cuz the digi speedo wasnt wrking.

the 2+2 is the model thats got back seats aswell 2 in frnt 2 in back 2+2.

I am new to zs aswell there is a ton of good info here and the guys seem pretty cool search the threads and ask Q's

The speedo has two cables, one is short right of the back of the cluster which connects to the long one that runs out the fire wall and down around to the tranny look for kinks and lube the inside of the tube the cable could be draging on the sleeve.

the gas guage from what i know about other cars is usually the sending unit in the tank not being grounded or just bad, Zs im not sure about yet, im sure ull find the info you need.

Take it easy and good luck

Your gonna love it, man. I pretty much bought mine to drive and then ended up sitting it on jackstands cuz I can't find a good transmission for it, since mine is bad.

But its definitely fun to work on, and mine was already ratty and needing fixed up, so i launched into it full tilt. Put down HushMat that I would have used for my '67 Mustang, bought some fix-a-carpet from walmart and laid it down, got the seats out of a 1991 or 1993 BMW 325i Convertible, mounted them, and have gotten most of the interior pieces to change over to black instead of nasty tan, and have deleted the center console.

Now comes push-button ignition, I'll take a pic once I decide exactly where its going.

Its an ongoing adventure to decide what to do next, when there's no desire or need to go "back to stock"

Tell ya what... I've been a member here for a long time, and these guys have bailed me out of more crappy situations than any other site for Z cars. Seriously. I also know these cars pretty well and can help out if/when you have an issue.

Just sounds like you have a bulb or two that went out in your dash. Simple fix, but a big pain to get to them. If you search, I'm sure you could find a thread on how to fix it. If not, hell ask away. We've answered the same exact question about a million times over anyway... what's a million and one?

I'm always glad to help out a new Z owner when I can.

That goes for me too. I may not know as much as some of the members here. But if something comes up. Where somebody needs tips or help. And I can assist them. I am more than willing to share what I know. And help them in any way I can. This really is a great site. And I have some great memories from here. This is pretty much where I learned a majority of my knowledge on Z cars.

My girlfriend will be sad with you about your subie.

Welcome to Zdriver... If these guys don't have an answer to any question/problem you have then it probably is not a problem
Seriously, they are very talented here and I am new also but I can confirm that the gas gauge issue is that you have to replace the sending unit. That is what I ended up doing. I have the same car except for the auto trans. You will love that car, I promise you that...
Enjoy!
