need education on 81 zx

I'm considering buying a 280zx that a friend has but I have many questions regarding the car. He said that it's an 81, but a 10th anniversary edition. My reading indicates that the anniversary cars were built in 80. This is what I got from the data plate: vin JN1HZ04S6BX266656 Build date 11/80
addl #s KHLS130JFUBICY 879C L28(e) 2753 FS5W7IBRC39 HS130
Plant X. Can anyone decipher these nos? The car is black with gold pinstriping, 5spd & t-tops.
Mechanically the car starts OK, but acts like it's fuel starved for about 30 secs & then runs fine. The owner thinks that maybe the fuel pump has a bad check valve? I'm open to any suggestions and/or comments since I'm a newbie to this site and to "Zs" themselves. Thanks, Bob

Yeah, let me try...this is from the Service manual:

KHLS130JFU = U.S.A. model, T-Bar Roof, L28E
FS5W7IB = Transmission - 5 speed - R200 rear differential
Tires size was 205/70/14

Thats all I got, of course this is from my '82 service manual but I think the numbers are the same.

10th anniv 280zx's have "10th anniversary" logos on the fenders, seats, center console, and have painted rims to match. There are 2 paint schemes. Black & gold, or black & red. Like thus:

Could be many things... and doesn't sound like the fuel pump. There are "check valves" after the fuel pump... fuel damper & fuel pressure regulator. Those prolly aren't the probs. If it runs rough, check the air regulator, air flow meter, timing, & cylinder head temp sensor.

Nice post NismoPick...

I was simply going to tell the guy that the cars owner is either a thief, a moron or both

Thanks for the comebacks!
I also have questions concerning bodywork. The floor pans are crispy right where they angle up to the torque box. Does anyone offer replacement pans or does one just fabricate them? How about rocker panel repair? They are just starting to pop by the wheelwell. Any recommendations for parts suppliers? Thanks, Bob

Crispy rotting floor pans? Paul Walker and mechanic kitty both say "DANGER TO MANIFOLD"

I dont know of anyone that has floorpan replacements for the 280zx, i tried look at MSA and Black Dragon but didn't see any. Just get some diamond plate aluminum!

Thanks for the info! This is my 1st experience with this site & I really appreciate others sharing their knowledge! I'm a newbie to Z's (& this site )so I have alot to learn. My 19 yr old son wants a "project" car & this ZX might fit the bill. I've restored detroit iron, but never anything like this(if we buy), so I'm trying to get a feel what I (we )would be getting into. I'm concerned about the "cold start" issue because I don't have any real experience testing air flow meters, etc. Can they be tested with a VOM or must the engine be shop tested?
First off though, I think that I'll do a dry/wet comp test to get an idea of the internals. The engine has under 80M miles. I'd assume that 150 to 180 is an appropriate range(within 10% of course)? Bob

Asking $3500, which strikes me as a little high considering body work needed.Thoughts? Bob

Where are you located? I know of a good ZX (yeah I found another one!) in my area with little rust and a good running engine for 800 dollars.

It has a gutted interior though.

I appreciate the offer, but I'm in Michigan. I don't think transport costs would justify the price. Bob
