An RB engine is a Skyline motor... I have almost thought about putting one in my 73 240z... but still in some way feel like it is bastardising my z....

you aussies, and your slang...

As for the RB, I know Isaac (icice9) took some pictures of a 280ZX with an RB26DETT, and a couple with RB25DET's. I can't find them, but they looked sweet. If I were going to spend the money on putting an RB into my ZX, I would go ahead and just buy a skyline that's already passed emissions in the states. They aren't as rare as they used to be. an RB in a Z (af any type) would take at LEAST $10k I would assume...

If you want to do it right, that's still a lowball estimate.

Here's what one looks like...

And yes, that is a 90MM throttle body... 50% larger diameter than the 60mm TB we all steal from the 240sx and you can't imagine how much more air that thing flows!

Its A LOOOOOT easier to just buy the motor, importing a skyline isn't what one would call a simple task or cheap. BTW, its an RB25DET, only the RB26 is a TT.

If you lived on the West Coast, I could show you some good import/export comps. that would be able to get you one, and even save on some of the fees involved, but being in virginia, i'm sorry, you're better off finding one over there.

More like 3 Parties, You, The Seller in Japan (or wherever you find one) and an Import company that will ship it to the states and do all of the customs forms for an additional fee. Not to mention all of the D.O.T. requirements that must be met afterwards (if you want it to be legal) which is a couple more thousand dollars and can take up to a year to pass (which is why more than 80% of Skylines in the US are not legal, no papers, no registration, just the key as proof of ownership...)

BTW, there are good companies in Japan that list their cars online (Batfa Motors is a good one) and are good resources to buy cars, I think they'll even arrange for it to be exported to anywhere aound the US for a fee based on which port its going to.

Seriously tho, its much easier and cheaper to just buy what your looking for out of the car through an american company who imports that sort of stuff (they get em by the container load) IE. Motors, Lights, even a front clip if you want to do a RHD conversion.

In that 4th picture you'll see one of the few LEGAL and fully registered R34 Skyline GT-R's in the US. And it's FREAKY fast. Smoked a 500+ hp twin turbo 350z. No, the Skyline is not completely stock...

Let's just say it's the shop where I work on most of my projects... It's not my shop, but I have my own wing!

Dammnnn, What i'd do to own that GT-R, fully legal, I could just imagine getting pulled over in that thing and the look on the cops face when he realized that this thing is a 500hp+ JDM Monster and that it was completely legal and he couldn't do a damn thing about it.

Or more like, I could imagine not getting pulled over...

man u americans and your skylines! lol
they are more popular in the states than in Japan haha

They have been built up to an almost godlike reputation, sorry to break a few hearts but unless its a GTR we are talking about stock for stock a 300ZXTT will own a R33 in every way, straight line, corners, comfort, looks. Gtst r pretty slow compared to allot of cars from the factory. The GTR is another matter all together, 2 different cars that hold the same name. i have driven both gtr's and gtst's and the only similarity in the cars at all is the looks.

the price of a GTR R43 is still around $100,000 here, but R32's go for about $30,000

if i was in the states the only reaon id get a line was to be different, 2JZ's are almost the RB26's equel, and are just as responsive to mods. They are also dirt cheap over there compared to an RB.

my money is on the 2Jz if i lived in America

tell me you don't want the clip just for the conversion...expect to do a motor swap too, BTW a skyline R33 clip alone is probably at least 5-6k and an R34 is probably a lot more...

Note: I say "probably" cause I don't know for sure, I searched around, but every place required you contact them for pricing info...hope you've got a lot of money man, otherwise I suggest you get your head outta the clouds. If you want to do the RHD conversion, you'll need a Fairlady Z clip, and if you want a skyline motor, you'll have to get that as well, you cant use the Skyline clip to do a RHD conversion, so w/ the clip and the motor, and the exteme amount of modifications, tons of extra parts you'll need, and troubleshooting, your looking at atleast 10k+, and thats not including importing fees, and costs for installation...and thats just so you can have a stock RB motor in your Z....not really worth it if you ask me....Id rather get a cheap 240sx, and drop an RB into that sucker for half the price.

hmmm so modifying your z so that the motor for the rhd skyline motor will most likely be cheaper?

Read my additional Note ^^

EDIT on my above post, your talking about a 280zx, so the motor would be the only necessary thing, but you're still gonna need a RHD clip of a 280zx if you want that RHD conversion too, which is probably harder to find than a RHD Skyline Clip, then your talking about a TON of custom fabrication to get that thing in right, plus, i'm not sure if you can run an RB off of your stock dif or if you'd have to find a skyline diff and do some more mods there...you'd be looking at almost neverending issues w/ trying to do something like that unless you could either do it all yourself in a shop, or pay someone to just get it done....so I dont know, I think this wouldn't be your best course of action unless you were pretty wealthy....you could spend the next 5 years trying to get this thing to come together, and by then it'd be pretty old and not so glorious anymore.

Now if I really had that kinda money, this is what I'd put in it

5.6L V8 w/ 300hp almost 400 ft. lbs stock, break it down, bulletproof it, drop the compression, then throw 2 fat *** turbos on it...this thing would destroy...probably rip itself from your engine bay before it got to the end of the quarter...its just a shame they dont have a 5spd manual for it yet, just a 5spd auto
