when I went to fill up the other day, i discovered my gas cap was gone.

This has to be the hardest part in the world to find.

I have a 80 280zx n/a it was made in February 1980 (per the metal tag in the door).

I have been to Oreilly, Advanced, Auto Zone, Wal-mart- every thing in my local area, and no one has a cap that fits.

O'reillys has two Murray caps (5783, 6806) both are too big to fit.
Rock Auto shows two, but have the are fro the European model.

courtesyparts does show two, but I don't want to spend money on something I'm not sure will fit.

can someone tell me what will fit.

MSA & BDA both sell gas caps. You can get the OEM part# from http://nissan4u.com and cross check it on courtesyparts, then call your local Nissan dealer. Or hit up the local junk yards (Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market) or hit up our classifieds / wanted section. Heck, I've got a few extra gas caps... I'll be at my garage tomorrow and can check em out for ya.

ordered one from the local Nissan dealer. this way if it does not fit, I might get a idea what is going on.

sometimes they keep gas caps at the counter at some junkyards. pretty distinctive if you remember what it looks like. a good locksmith can rekey it to fit your ignition key. if you were around seattle I have one I'd give you but arkansas is a stretch.
